He hasn't ate and he is moving very slow
I thought my chameleon was suffering from depression.

thanks for your help i appreciate it
whittier, LA
I have a specialist in mind, kinda far but i'm sure it'll be worth the drive
Howdy,

Whittier is within a reasonable driving distance to Dr. Greek in Yorba Linda. That might be who you are thinking about. That's where I go . I have spare "everything" if you need to borrow something :). Several of us in the SBCK group are somewhat nearby if you need help.

P.S the next meeting is this Tuesday night!

wat about the R Zilla T-5 (tropical series 25) 20" set up? my bro is currently using this set up with his mutil breed panther?

OH and OP! i know wat happened, it happened to me, but he got over it within a few hours after gettin him away from her...i had my BB ambilobe near my bros MUTT (like 5 breeds in one) and he fliped a wig! lighting all up like a damn kaliedascope! but as i said he got right back his normal self a couple hours later

so how long has your brother been using the light?. Did you see the post a few above yours? It was the T-5 but the desert series, not tropical. I don't know if there is a difference! But it is not a good light from what has been written!!! We all use the Reptisun 5.0 tube and NONE of us every have any isues whatsoever!!!

Howdy,

Sorry, I forgot to reply to your post last night . (Thanks, Carol, for your follow-up post). The original "Tropical 25" had the potential to kill a chameleon, just like the Desert 50, but it was a slower process since it had a lower output level of the shorter wavelength UVB (heading into UVC). All of this was supposed to be fixed with their phosphor reformulation. As I mentioned before, the results are not published on the UVGUIDE UK yet. My suspicions are that they have improved it but not perfected it. I also believe that their T8 line started from their acquisition of "ESU Reptile" product line. At some point I think they started to use their own phosphor formula in those T8 tubes. As to when that occurred (pre or post R-Zilla formula change), I can only speculate :(.

In summary to Pogosaur, your chameleon is exhibiting similar symptoms that were originally exhibited by other chameleons (Bearded Dragons too) when the R-Zilla Desert 50 or Tropical 25 with the original formula were used with reptiles. The closer the chameleon's position was to the tube, the worse the symptoms. I took photos of a 3 month-old chameleon that had been UV burned to death very quickly under a Tropical 50. I acquired and sent that original tube and fixture to the UK for the analysis. The results were sent by Dr. Baines to the parent company of R-Zilla. That company's PhD was shocked to find out that all of his equipment did not uncover the problem (he didn't have a spectrometer) during development. They then modified the formula. One big problem is that even after recovering most of the bad product from the marketplace, there is still some of the original formula out there. Another problem is that we don't yet have the published results for the new formula out on the UVGUIDE UK yet to determine its safety and effectiveness.

Wow Dave, that is some powerful, important information!!!All your posts are always so interesting and informative. I guess like you said there are some still floating around out there and are still probably being sold from old stock which is ashame.

KNEW IT!, ill have a chit chat with him and have him read this, thank you both very much. i worry for his lil girl, as hes got a 4 year old kid and an EGG IN THE OVEN right now. I find it amazing that the company's product development folks didn't have or use a spectrometer while designing a light! How did they expect to document the output levels???

I made an appointment for pogo on thursday with a specialist.
I removed that damn uvb light thats hurting my little guy. I'm anxious to get info before hand though. Although I removed the light he often has his eyes closed. According to the exotic reptile store they think that the uvb might of burned his retina or his cones. This is causing him not to eat and still remain slow. I thought he was sleeping but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any tips before his appt. on thursday? >.<

The poor guy. Those lights are brutal..I don't understand why they're still on the market  Hopefully Pogo will get better soon and the vet should def know how to handle the problem.

Oh, I am sorry that your chams eyes have been hurt by that light. He looks like a beautiful guy. I hope he will get better soon!

Howdy Pogosaur,

Here's a link to Dr. Baines' UVGUIDE UK article: http://www.uvguide.co.uk/phototherapyphosphor.htm With a little luck, all you are dealing with is a case of photo-kerato-conjunctivitis (snow blindness) with no permanent damage. More on this eye condition: http://www.uvguide.co.uk/phototherapyphosphor-info.htm

Although I'm sure he's very familiar with the problem, it wouldn't hurt to either print out the important facts from the website for Dr. Greek or at least give him the link to the article just in case he doesn't have it handy. Tell him I sent you. That way he'll know for sure that it was one of those nut-cases from the internet that gave you the info :). He'll inspect the cornea for damage and prescribe treatment if any is needed. Good luck!

(All of this assumes that the R-Zilla and its non-terresterial UVB levels are at fault. There is still a good chance that you have a version that doesn't produce the "bad" UVB and you have a totally unrelated issue with your chamleons health :(. The good news is that you are going to a vet that can help :).
