so i was thinking about buying a big bulk order of dubia and start breeding them. Does anyone think i would have problems doing it with just buying a bulk order or should i specifically buy a breeding pair or something!?

This largely depends on how many you want to produce. I wouldn't recommend anything lower than say 100 females to start a colony with. Otherwise you're in for a very slow road.

You could either buy smaller sized dubia. They are cheaper and you get more per bug usually. Downside is you're going to have to wait a long time before they even turn into adults. Or you could get larger ones that are weeks/a month away from adults. You get less to start, but you start getting babies much quicker. Buying actual adults is hit and miss. Sometimes they are already older and die in a few months, not to mention most adult females are 75 cents to $1 a piece.

Patience is key here, to NOT feed anything out of the colony. You want to wait months for it to establish itself. If you need to feed dubia, buy feeders separately. Good luck!

Hi,

I started breeding my Dubia about 9 months ago and they have really started to explode the last month in both size and numbers.

I started with about 125 adult females and 50 males. They produced babies right away but over a few months I would estimate that 80 % of the females died and I think that they were just further along in the life cycle and a bit used up from the supplier. I did buy several hundred large (not adult) feeders and grew those out for about 6 weeks and they are all producing babies now and will continue to do so for quiet some time.

The key is feed well, keep warm and dont pull form the colony until you feel that it is producing at a good pace. The babies grow slow. I experimented with several homemade roach chow recipes until I found one that they went to town on and they are growing pretty good.

It's really cool when you check and you finally have nymphs :)
Good luck.
Getting my panthers to finally eat roaches took forever but now they crush them!
