Dubia Sex

No sicko's - this post isn't about bug porn...

A couple months ago I bought 50 dubia nymphs. They're now...finally...starting to shed into adults. The first five have been males. Does this seem odd? Shouldn't there be a 50% chance of getting males or females? To my calculations, either I'm doing something weird to cause my bugs to morph into all males, or I hit a 1/32 chance of getting a male 5 times in a row.

I have about the same ratio I don't think your doing anything wrong.

I have noticed that some of the males will become adults sooner than the females in my colony. Some seem to have their final molt at a smaller size than many of the female nymphs (female adults are bigger anyways, so it makes sense that they would have to become larger as nymphs before becoming adults.) It is possible to sex the nymphs to determine if you have females that just haven't molted yet or if the seller only sold you males. There are many threads on it.

I think pssh is right about males maturing quicker. I don't know about sexing the nymphs but seriously where are the sickos meant to go? This has porn, sex and nymphs all over it

Its pretty natural, I've been breedering my own dubia's for a while, they seem to morph in groups. I almost always find I'll get a group of males, then a week or so later a group of females
