Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. When Lilo came to me she was shedding. I got her on thursday and it is still not coming off. I looked atthe skin she has and it looks crackly with red colors in those crack. My panther has soft skin hers is really rough. Is that normal?

Do you mean the old skin or the new skin beneath is crackly with red?
Whatever you do, DO NOT try to peel the skin off, it may not be ready and you can cause damage to the underlying skin.
Can you post a clear closeup pic of the area?

I would never pick the shedding skin. She is afraid of me so she is black. I did just see a pice of someone's jackson and the skinn looks like mine

I can not tell all too well from the pictures but it looks to be her colors. I have seen pictures of a few female jacksons that show alot of red. Was she a wild caught? Alot of the time they will brighten up alot after being in captivity for a while, most noticably after sheds. It doesn't look irritated or like an open wound in person does it? I think you just have a pretty girl there.

Yes she was wild caught. I did not realize that was not the best choice. I got her at underground reptles. Good I am glad I am just being paranoid. Sorry I had to take the pic quick she high tails it to the back of her cage away from me. :)

I keep Jacksons, and they females have some red in their gular (throat) area. As far as the shedding, she's O.K. Just let her scratch it off and keep her misted like you have been. Definitely keep misting because letting her humidity go to low will impair the skin from coming off easily.

Its not a problem. Sometimes it is alot easier to see what is going on in person no matter how good the picture. She looks good, try to give her as much privacy as possible. WC's for the most part do not like people, don't take offense to her running from you :). Some will warm up with time and good husbandry, others will insist that you are evil for the rest of their lives.

I am struggling with the humidity I just covered 2 sides with plastic so the humidity is much better today so hopefully it will help her.

I know what you mean about the humidity. Do you have forced air heat? I have taken to covering three sides of all my cages for the winter months. In addition if it gets really cold I used utrasonic humidifiers. The produce a cool fog that is much like a cloud. It can be sent throught 1 1/2" pvc piping into their cages. I let mine run on the lowest setting all day for the larger screen cages. This in addition to the normal misting and covered sides really helps to keep the humidity higher for longer.

One thing you can do that we just did is go buy a Vicks cool mist humidifier and put it in from of the cage they are fairly cheap $20 on up.:)

Did you cut a hole in the screen to pipe it in ? Winter is dry here and cold.

No I just set the open end right onto the top of the screen. It does accumliate some water on the screen unerneath it, but not a whole lot. To compensate I put it above one of the plants to catch the water that drips.

This is a little different, it was a modified temporary setup. In this one I drilled holes at the bottom of the pvc pipe that runs across the top of the cage, the mist then fell into the cage. It was the only picture I had handy atm.

One thing to keep in mind if you do try this. Always make sure water will flow back down your pvc pipes toward the humidifier. The walls of the pvc get alot of condesation on them. If the pipes are pitched into the cage every so often it will sound like a faucet just turned on. It not a horrible thing, just more water to get rid of, when it could be recycled.

Thanks for the info My husband is a pipefitter he can set this up for me. This will be good in my panthers 2x2x4 cage that one impossible to keep the humidity up.

Perfect! I use the Vicks 5100N, the pvc fits perctly into the top outlet of these. Others will work, just not sure which ones in particular. Make sure you keep them clean though. Mineral deposits will ruin the ultrasonic dudad and make it useless. Hope it helps, I hate the winter and the humidity battle it brings.

I also should add, I have used one humidifier to service 3 cages. I think it is probably possible to do more, I just haven't done it.
