Yes, you'll need to cut a small hole. You can make the hole look a little neater and less likely to fray by hot gluing a correctly sized plastic washer over the rough edges.
I personally didn't cut any hole in the top of my meshed cage. You just have to play with the switch to get it at the right amount of drips you want. I like to have one drip go every 15-20 seconds.
