"Don't eat that!!! Yikes!!"

I was doing some cage rearanging the other day and took Osang (female baby Vieled) outside in the backyard to bask in some natural sun. I was fitting a tile in the bottom of the cage to make water clean up easier. I was watching her and working at the same time, but it was not enough. I had her in a large potted Hibiscus plant I set up for her to bask in on sunny days. I looked at her and then saw that a wasp landed on her hibiscus!!! I saw it in slow motion and then saw her turn to it and "SLURP", it was gone! She ate it before I could swat it away. I know she passed it already and was thankfully ok. I just need to keep a better eye on her when she is outside. Has anyone had a situation like this before?

I read on here before that someones cham ate a wasp and everyone said it would be ok....that in the wild they eat all sorts of bugs. Jann

Ive seen mine eat bees and wasps before. They seem to really know what they are and they will chew them really fast it seems. I dont want them to eat them but the occasional wasp or yellow jacket will wonder in.

there was a thread a while back where a veiled ate a humming bird >.<

I personally havent had my cham eat anything outside besides maybe a fly

Speaking of eating birds, there are threads about chams being fed baby button quail. I have both chams and buttons (that I raised from a day old) and can't imagine feeding them off! They were/are so cute....it would feel like feeding a baby chameleon to a dog or something. :(

We get a rogue docile seeming type of wasp in here sometimes...it is one of these: http://k43.pbase.com/u47/crocodile/large/34100055.blackhornet2.jpg

I have fed a few off and the chams really like them. They do chew them very quickly- I think they know what they are.

Well She seams to be doing fine as that was on Wednesday and its now Friday. I'm relieved to see that it is a "just happens" situation, and not a "bad parent" situation.:D either way I'm just glad shes ok. ;)

I wouldnt worry about it. Same thing happened to me one day. I keep my guys outside all summer and one day was doing some things around the yard. I saw one of my male run up to the middle of his huge outside cage and hit a wasp in the top corner. Im telling you he WANTED that thing. I ran over while he was chewing and he was fine. I know all of my chams have eaten them and other types of bees because there are a good many around my place in the summer. I dont worry about it and chalk it up as another variant in the diet. I will catch bumble bees and throw them in the cages because they dont sting but they have to catch the ones that sting on by themselves. The bees and wasps are attracted to the water after a misting so there is no stopping them if you want your guys to get the benefits of natural sun.`
