Do they need insect variety?

My friend has a chameleon, though I do not (yet) and he was asked me if it was alright to feed his chameleon super worms only. I said I didn't know. I also have a question: do they NEED crickets or can they be fed a variety of worms?

They need to be fed a variety of insects. 5 is the minimum usually recommended to have rotating through out the week. 3 feeders each day. It's preferred to have more. It is needed to have at least a couple hard exoskeleton insects. What exactly would he be feeding the chameleon?

I wouldn't cut down on anything in that, in fact I'd add some more soft bodied feeders. Feeding purely one feeder is bad, especially if it's super worms, Super worms aren't particularly the best feeder in the world. They are rather fatty and can cause addiction to the said worm so if he does ever want to change the feeder down the line, his chameleon will most likely not change over.

I know of at least a few successful keepers that only feed crickets. As long as they are dusted and gut loaded properly a cricket only diet is probably acceptable. I would also think that a Dubia only diet could be made to work as they are easy to gut load.

I would not feed any diet that consists 100% of larval feeders (ie any of the worms) because they are difficult to properly gut load and in the case of super worms the too much of the hard exo skeleton could cause digestive issues down the road not to mention they often have more fat than is ideal as Andee mentioned above.

With the above said Andee's suggestions about variety are definitely good suggestions and really a much better course to follow for any newer keeper who doesn't fully understand the intricacies of gut loading and supplementation.

OK so don't really mean to barge in this conversation, buy plz help me! My male veild chameleon (2. 5 months old) has stopped eating from my hand and barley eats at all. 3 crickets at the most. I've tried super worms (his favorite ) but he won't budge! He also a little dark in color and hangs out on the bottom ( which he never does ). Thanks for any help.:(

How sure are you that "he" is a male? Chameleons aren't stupid; they might go on "hunger strike" but they won't let themselves starve. Pics would help @BabyChamCham
He has spurs on the back of his feet, and I was told so by the breeder. He's also in the middle of shedding too.

He looks much older than 2 and a half months. The reason he's probably stopped eating is because he's shedding.

I'm pretty sure mist enough already. His skin came of quick and is already like 95% done. Only a little on the feet and tail. And yea I'm thinking he's actually a little over 3 months

Increase ur misting sessions during his skin sheds so the shed skins will come off easily.

Thats good to know, mist on those pretty feet n cute tail until the shed completely off, when u mist again.

Thanks. But I'm still worried. He's still dark in color and is a little hesitant to eat. Since he hasn't eaten much, a few minutes ago I finally got him to eat about 9 crickets and 1 super worm. Here are some pictures of my baby boy :p
