Displaying Chameleons

I just left the show at Arlington Texas were I was only there for a while. But frist let me tell you that I know nothing about the chameleon business. So could someone shed some light on me. Tell me if this is correct. I just witness chameleons, maybe 8 inches long in a round maybe 8 inch clear plastic bowl. The bowl was 2 maybe 3 inches tall. Do these animals have to stay in this for the weekend? If so this isn't right. The plastic bowls stacked maybe six high. Looked like some of the chameleons maybe had 1/2 inch clearence of the thickness of the bowl. If someone is going to display for selling Should they not have them in a maybe at least 1ft x 1ft x 2ft. This is a living thing. I wasn't going to buy anything, but I wouldn't of because if they would do that at the show. What would they do behind closed doors. There were 4 large mellers and I think he said 1 spinytail? in a 2ft x 2ft x 2ft black screen cage. But the plastic bowls is what I thought was terrible. Is this what the industry do with these animals and then after treating them this way say they wont stay alive very long. Well I wouldn't either if I was treated that way. Sorry tell me if I am wrong in beleiving this way.

I understand if you were shipping . That way the animal wouldn't get knocked around in the shipping bowl or what ever.

i see people do that at shows, and i dont usually buy from them though. most people i see keep them in large screen cages for show.

I agree, I see in vids of reptile expos there in america and they sometimes come across a full grown Panther in a plastic container similar to what you have described.
Well Im quite happy to know that people selling chameleons in expos here keep them in excellent housing even just for about 3 days.
Some are Big cylindrical cages about 2 feet tall with a 5 litre bucket as a top wit a hole in the bottom with a tube and small tape as a drip for water, there were 4 cages each one contained: baby Parsons another 1 young carpet cham another a Veiled and another with a baby oustalets.
And there are others that will house hatchling chams in 100-175 g flexariums.
Well it will be good to hear more replies to what others think about this.

Thank you for the reply. If we talk about this and not turn our heads then maybe it will change. Snake in the wild put them self in tight quarters under thing like rocks and logs . And go for long times not eating or drinking. But I dont think that chameleons go days in tight quarters and with out eating or drinking. Maybe I am wrong. I hope this is not exceptable to all.

How do you think they are packed when they come from Africa?
It is unfortunate at the time, but this system allows people to transport these creatures safely and securely to potential buyers.

I totally understand shipping them in that matter. If they had alot of room they would be damaged in shipping. And if you had to ship them to the show then ok. But when they get there don't let them set in the shipping container for days. The shipping container and shipping it self is why some of them die. So when you receive a animal you fell releif to see that they made it in one piece. Then you releave it from the stress of the tight container. That is what I dont understand.

A shipping container is for shipping or traveling. Keeping a chameleon in a cup for the duration of the show is a bunch of bull poo... I would not buy a chameleon from a person who did not at least display them correctly.

Here is how we display our chameleons at the shows... For the most part, just like how you should keep them.

Thank You so much for stepping up and showing how it should be done. We cannot turn our heads and allow it to be perceived as though the plastic cup is the way. If you are displaying that way at the shows then maybe you need to either get out of it or think about the animal more. Because there is people coming for the first time seeing this. And they will go away from the show thinking its ok to keep the chameleon in the cup for days.
thanks again for stepping up and saying what has to be said

Thanks... Most people that have chameleons do it the correct way in most cases. LLL, Reptile Depot even do it, Mike has a good set up as did Tyler when he did shows. It’s not hard or expensive to display them correctly.

I make most of my cages... taking a beak now from drilling holes actually. :)
