Differences between Species?

I am in the market for a new chameleon. I have two ambilobe panthers now, male and female. I would like to broaden my chameleon horizons and get a different species. I really like veiled chameleons but know nothing about their habbits, personalities, etc. Those of you who have veilds or any other kind of chameleons please chime in and give me a little info on your species and your experiences. Anything will help, thanks

As you've probably learned from your panthers, specific personalities can be very individual within species. Some veileds are nice, others quite surly and mean. I had a huge adult male who was easy to handle but I've also had both sexes who were not. In terms of care, space, husbandry they are a little more forgiving of drier conditions than most species but again because of your panther experience you won't find them very different. Because there have been many more of them produced in captivity for a longer time we simply know more about their specific needs.

Where you are going to get into different needs and setup types is with the montane species like Jackson's, Fischer's, Usambara three-horned, four horned, etc. They will want a lot more humidity, cooler temps year round, very careful minimal supplementation. Aside from individual personality traits many of the montane species seem to be shyer and show their stress differently (not so much aggression, more duck and hide instead).

I always say to pick the species that appeals to you the most. The one you find yourself going back to look at time and time again. Then adapt your husbandry to the cham and enjoy what you get.

Yeah I really like the veilds! Do both sexes have big casques? Is egg laying in females the same as with panthers? Do people out there have veilds that are friendly? I hear they have a tendancy to be mean. Are their different locales as with the panthers? Do they have much color variation?

Male veileds have bigger casques than females.

Females can lay eggs without being mated so once the female is sexually mature it important that she has a place in her cage to dig to show you she is ready to lay eggs.

Some of them can tolerate handling quite well...others won't.

There is quite a variations in color...green and yellow...white and torquoise in the males..and gravid or receive females are very pretty.

I have a female veiled and she is a doll! She loves to come out and is not shy at all. She eats feeders from my hands lets me hand water her. She will also hunt and drink from her dripper no problem.
Males have the more vibrant colors but the females are just as precious if your a chameleon lover
