Diapause???

So I have some veiled eggs just laid the other day. I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on this diapause period during incubation?

What would you like to know?

Diapause is for a winter dormancy.

In terrarium bred eggs, there is no true winter, but there is still diapause.

Because of this, eggs will go into a rest state of varying length.

If you keep your eggs at a constant temperature, the length tends to last longer.

You can shorten it by keeping your eggs warmer for a couple of weeks (upper 70s), then cooler for a couple of months (mid 60s), and then back to warmer again for the remainder of incubation.

Or you can do daily night/day temp fluctuations of about 10 degrees and that will usually shorten diapause as well.

Or you can combine the two- keep them warmer for a couple of weeks, then cooler for a couple of months, then do day/night temp fluctuations- that is what I did a year or so ago and ended up with the shortest incubation of my life- near 5 months I think.

Or if you don't want to mess with your eggs and are a bit nervous because these are your first and you don't want to do anything too wierd- just keep them between the upper 60s and upper 70s throughout incubation and they will hatch.

Oh ok thanx for the advice again lol another question tho. Would it be ok to incubate veild eggs between 78-82? Cause I got a paper from lllreptile that says that.

yes. It will be fine. Incubation usually lasts longer at those constantly higher temperatures though.

A simple way to drop the temp if you are using an incubator is to just put the incubator on a timer so it shuts off at night.

If your home just happens to be those warmer temps- they will work.

But fluctuating temperatures results in shorter incubation times and my casual observation has been that the babies are larger and stronger as well.
I really need to do a serious trial one of these years and confirm that- but that is my feeling.
