Death due to egg binding

correction

Dr. Greek's office is in Yorba Linda- Near Anaheim (I worked out there)- Sorry! Just saw him on episode 166 - Yep that is him.. :) I wonder why he did not tell me about Chameleon Academy- I have been going there for 5 years- all wellness checks. Great man

Found a few earlier pics of the 2nd egg I will post the 1st eggs progress next page.
Laid 12 1 2020 (not pictured) Dates are on bottom of pics (just putting it out there I don't assume everyone knows).
1st pic - 01 29 2021
I did try to post dates over pics but there is a different with the formatting and was unsuccessful (anyone know how I would like the help).

Since these are eggs just wanted to pass on some info on Silk Worm eggs (just a quick fyi)
I ordered some and in the paperwork they said " if you want to count and challenge them feel free" I did. But it was just for educational purposes.. There are 616 eggs here.. I expanded the pic and placed a color dot on each one. 10 dots of 1 color then when I was done, counted the colors multiplied by 10 ===== 616 :D (y)

@redhorse said..." Veileds are cool and I have had them since the first ones arrived in the U.S. in the mid 1990's (what I was told back then) not sure of the Canadian history"...I got my first veileds around 1994 or 1995 here in Canada. (It ended up being 2 males...I didn't know about Spurs on veileds then.)

"When they start to hatch, only the ones that the egg splits by their heads hatched with no issues. The others split near back end (not sure why) and after a few died (waiting the few days recommended here) I started cutting those ones as soon as the eggs collapse and not wait the recommended few days...if I had known you were having that problem, I would have told you to cut the other end of the egg too. Also...for the future...if you get "twin"/fused eggs...watch at hatch time because al,oust always, one pips into the other egg and you lose one of the "twins".

What war were you in?
What grades did you teach?

@JacksJill said..."egg binding isn't the eggs sticking together"...isn't this included under the term dystocia which is eggbinding?

"Overly large clutches and oversized eggs can be a part of this but are not solely the problem. MBD and dehydration can be other factors"...females that suffer from follicular stasis often develop MBD, are overweight, suffer from prolapsed and other health issues....so it seems to make sense that females with eggbinding would have similar issues I guess.

Funny! The species must have been new to the pet trade. My first 4 were all males and not sure if the spur was even known back then. My experience was making a call to Florida Reptiles and asking for some chameleons. They told me a new species just arrived but were not for sale. One of the females laid eggs and you would have to wait until they hatched. So I waited....

I know in the mid 1990's there were veiled and a sub species which was smaller but don't remember much more or if they did DNA verification.
There were dark spotted ones in the UK a few years later but my memory isn't that great with the details.

Desert Shield-Desert Storm-

Philippines during coup attempt (monitoring intel) in 89 but not a war

Had a reptile show for a few years taking them to elementary schools in the area- PTA approved. I was also licensed and insured (nothing under the table).
I taught some elementary science classes (short period of time due to health issues).

The health issues cause me to retire early. A big reason for my downsizing, just physically struggle, since I am limited to what I can lift these days. I tested my abilities a few months ago and was unable to walk for about 4 days but the pain ended after 14 days.. Such is life. :)

Totally agree with the possibility of the females health issues that were undiagnosed, but possible and probable (see, I am still learning). The only thing I should have done was have her blood tested (wellness check) since she was eating, moving, no deformities, laid a healthy clutch with no issues earlier, lived outside and ate everything (now realize can be negative). Followed the Calcium D3 and Reptivite no D3 guidelines, but maybe since she lived outside, I should have D3 once a month or she was getting to much vitamins. Food and Water was not an issue IMHO...

Hope this didn't bore ya to much..

Have a GREAT April 1st... I know I will. Peace!

SPECIES WAS NEW IN THE STATES AND CANADA AROUND THAT TIME. I HADN'T HAD TO DEAL WITH TARSAL SPURS BEFORE THAT SO I DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS SOMETHING TO LOOK FOR.

Desert Shield-Desert Storm- WOW...I COULD NEVER HAVE FOUGHT IN A WAR. I'D HAVE DIED OF TERROR/FEAR.

I taught some elementary science classes (short period of time due to health issues). I WAS ALMOST A TEACHER...HAD TO TEACH FOR TWO YEARS AFTER TRACHERS COLLEGE TO GET MY CERTIFICATE AND DECIDED THAT IT WASN'T FOR ME.

MY CHAMELEONS DIDN'T GET OUTSIDE HERE IN CANADA OFTEN SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE SMALL AMOUNTS OF D3 I USED. VITAMIN A IS SOMETHING TO WATCH TOO OF COURSE.

Hope this didn't bore ya to much..NOPE...NOT BORED.

Have a GREAT April 1st... I know I will. Peace!
OH NO...ITS APRIL FOOLS DAY! DID YOU SEE THE VOLTSWAGON AD...NO I DIDNT MIS SPELL IT.

Things are "for sure" different. I would have to look back and see when Captive Breeding became so successful.
I went to "Sticky Tongue Farms" when the owner was importing Panthers. I was amazed at some of their sizes. He called them the Grandparents and were not for sale. I was with a pet shop owner that was shopping for panther.. I watched one Giant Panther eat 3 spring peeper frogs (little frog out this way). The owner talked about setting up a breeding colony in Asia somewhere but it was my only time visiting the place. He was burglarized and did not let people visit anymore. He did have a canopy / tent full of Quads but the squirrels were biting off their tails, so he was not selling them. I was unaware of captive breeding.

Wow...squirrels biting off the tails!
Trying to think who was breeding in Asia around that time...it was someone well known....name won't come to me.

I know it has been a long time but the thread did not turn out the way I wanted and finally was ready to deal with other opinions again.
So, the eggs have been doing great!

I have 5 that are infertile and 1 that shrunk, so I thought it died. I placed in container with the infertile ones and it rehydrated/might still be alive.
Quick photo update since they might be hatching within 2 to 12 weeks. Her last batch was 6 months with a few stragglers.

First, I am sorry for your loss of that beautiful girl! Second, I do find this extremely interesting and hope you continue to post and update us on the egg developments. I want to see pics of the babies when they hatch. Three, I think we all have to experiment some when keeping these awesome creatures because no one knows everything there is to know about them and no one is an expert except the Almighty. I’m glad you posted about this!!
