dark color question

My guy likes to hang out by his UVB light alot and most of the time he's a darker color. Knowing since he's dark in color he's absorbing, but is it common for him to always be dark?

I"m using a repti sun 5.0 and the light is about 4 inches away from his basking branch. The reason I have it so close is because the box the bulb came in says that screen or mesh filter out 50% light, and the light only put out UVB in a range on 12" from the bulb. The basking bulb is a 25w bulb can't remember the brand, but its a reptile bulb.

Should I get the repti sun 10.0 to put out more UVB? Or is there another issue I'm not seeing?

Temperature?

It sounds like it is probably more of a temperature related issue. What temperature is the cage (High and Low)? Also is the UVB bulb a brand new bulb and how many hours a day is light provided.

Being a jackson xanth his temps range from 84 for the direct spot where the basking light hits, to anywhere in the 70's for the rest of the cage. I use a cool mist humidifier that goes off every two hrs for 30 min to keep the cage cool and humid. Bulb is brand new about two weeks old and its on from 9am to 9pm.

the temp on the front shows 67.3F and in the second pic it shows the probe to the therm going to the top of the cage. is this reading basking?

if it is 67.3 at the top of the cage....he is just cold.

Sorry that's inaccurate I had just misted down the cage and the probe got wet :/

Just to clarify things a bit more, he's under the UVB bulb for about 30% of the day. He rarely goes under the UVA bulb. He does turn to a pretty green for some part of the day and is more active when I'm around. I guess the reason I'm asking about the color is because he really doesn't look like what I see in the picture gallery.

Also I've heard that when chams tails are rolled up its a good sign. What if its not?

honestly you stated his is active and eating. so those are telling me is isnt in a bad way. if he is semi new to you he could be adjusting to the new enviroment.

also not all chameleons are the same as far as coloring is concerned. some can be naturally darker than others and or lighter.

chameleon use there tails a bunch while roaming. normally when it is curled it while they are comfortable and resting.
