Crickets!

I ordered 500 crickets and they came today- I swear there were thousands in there. There where at least 3,000 hopping around my livingroom

Obviously the method I used to remove them from their shipping box and egg crate did not go very well.

The 2 cats are still enjoying the stragglers I missed in fetching all those dang things!

I never had a problem with the 100 I had been getting.

How do YOU get them from shipping container to cricket keeper?

My keeper is a plastic 3 drawer unit. different bugs for different drawers! Except now crickets are in two of them since there are thousands of them....not really just the explosion of them in the living room sure looked like it!

Very simple, Linda, but not so simple if you don't see the trick. Look on your cricket box sides, and one of them should have a taped trap door, one that if you cut the tape away, it would obviously open up and create a way for you to shake the crickets out and into your cricket keeper.

You would really be able to get every single one out, but after you get most of them out, you can cut open the container and easily remove the rest along with the egg crates.

thanks but there was no door! there was a screened spot. I was looking for something like those cricket boxes petco uses but nope and it did say cricket box right on it. So what do you do if there is NO DOOR

when my cham was eating crikckets I got smart and transferred them in the bathtub! They could not crawl up the sides of the tub. Just make sure if you do it, you wash out the tub REAL good when you are done!!!

I received my first shipment of 1000crickets. I put them into container in my backyard. Maybe next time just do it outside, so if any do get out there isn't a problem :]

lol i had this problem...
what i did was get one of my clear recycling garbage bags and then i dump the whole box into it and shack them all out of the box then tear a hole in the corner of the bag and dump them all in like a big funnel
works for me with 0 escapes

Outside nope- winter coming, but might consider it in the Spring

I like the idea of the garbage bag, but emptying the box and filling the drawers in the tub!

That will be my plan next time

I use the large plastic totes from home depot that cost around $4 each. There's plenty of room to open the box and dump everything out. I actually use 2 bins. First one to dump out the crickets and whatever other junk is in there and the 2nd to pick out the crickets leaving the dead ones, the half eaten potato and the egg crates that came with the shipping box. I have the food and fresh egg crates setup in the 2nd bin.

Thats funny, I had the same problem. I put them into the plastic tote outside. Than bring them inside. The pet shop by me keeps his in a plastic tote and he didnt need a lid its deep enough so they cant climb out. One thing I see he did was: He took sandpaper and he ruffed up the smooth surface of the walls along the bottom of the tote up to a height of about 6 inches all around the tote. This makes it easy for the crickets to climb up on the lower walls and create more grazing space. I have a lid on my tote I think it keeps it warmer in there at night. I read that crickets need a 80+ temp for best conditions. I guess they only live six weeks and die. You will have to clean the cricket box too so you will need another large tote. I put them from one to the other and try to clean as best I can. They stink. lol They have started chirping so I guess they are mature now. I want to learn more on breeding them. Can anyone tell me about breeding (eggs and baby crickets and how to separate them). They are like para nah. I give them all my unused salad greens, cricket food and almost enjoy watching them grow too! I have two bearded Dragons and one Panther. I think feeding my crickets good food is making my new friends HEALTHIER!

I have two beardies! Elliot and Aubrey HATE crickets which was great cause I don't like them either- they stink, make noise so I was extremely happy they did not like them

Then I rescued Lily from a grade school classroom this past July......

Now I have crickets.
I keep them in the drawers and the inside at the bottom is a little rough so mine can move on the sides a bit. I try to feed them off before they start chirping but I think I am out of luck this time since I have so many. Trying to cut down on shipping costs and winter travel for them.

Trying to convince myself those D. beetles (not roaches in this house) might be a better alternative but I have seen some and they seem huge...
