okay, i know i ask for advice on here all the time about my school projects and stuff...but hopefully you guys arent too annoyed with it :/ i love some of the replies i get and they help me out alot! so this time i have a creative writing assignment (along with senior paper which is due tuesday, dumb, huh?) and its a narrative, a story, can write whatever i want, so i want to do a story about a character starting up a pet business, and some of the amazing people they meet, and how awesome some of the pets are and such, but i need a conflict, and resolution, or there would be no purpose -.- help?

Maybe 2 customers wanting to adopt the same pet at the same time , leaving you , as the store owner , to come up with a way to make both happy so they keep coming back ??

i like it, but seems too simple..i wonder if theres a way to magnify a similar problem..im an over achiever when it comes to stuff i enjoy, so instead of writing a 5 page short story, id love to do a 50 page novel ;)

Well , if you're gonna make an old man think ... sheeesh

You could go anywhere with this. Conflict could be anything from the main character going up against a huge, money-hungry chain that is more concerned with $ than animals, and how the town pulls together to support the owner. Or an entire town that is against a pet shop because of a tragedy that happened back in the day (think Footloose) and how the owner overcomes this (character vs society). Or an amazing pet shop that is destroyed in a natural disaster and the challenges of saving the animals and getting the business going again (character vs. nature). Or how about a good pet shop owner who is given a golden opportunity to make lots of money, but he would have to compromise the care of his animals (character vs. self). So many directions....

Think of a story line that you REALLY love that has been made (examples, Footlloose, Rocky, The Goonies, whatever ) and change it. Most stories are new versions of old stories. As long as you are creative, original, and put your heart into it, you will get an A. Trust me, I'm a teacher!

Now that's excellent advice ... listen to our resident teacher .

I agree, Shaunaroxanne is on target.

I particularly like the "big chain that cares more for $ than animals" idea because it would give your character a chance to champion those animals.

hmm if you have a character staring a busniess maybe they are trying to locate stock and end up having to choose between a smuggler and honest way to aquire the animals.
maybe they go smuggler first and have issues or some sort they, sovle the conflict by dealing with breeders or aquireing import permits..
just a quick idea..

Hoj really wants a smuggler in the story!

So the owner could be a guy who has a passion for animals because when he was a child, he witnessed his mother being killed by smugglers as she was trying to save a group of pygmy chimpanzees that were being taken for the black market pet trade. As he is is struggling to keep his honest business afloat, he is presented a lucrative offer to provide exotic pets to VIPs. As he is exploring this option, he begins to notice that things are not as they appear, and he begins having flashbacks of his childhood..........
