When you say "warm mist" humidifier do you mean a vaporizer? Does it heat the water to produce steam? That's what you don't want to use, as the water reservoir will sit and stagnate...and potentially support algae and bacterial growth. What is often called a "cool mist" humidifier is an ultrasonic type that produces a room temperature fog. Any humidifier can harbor algae and bacteria so you do need to clean them periodically. The cool mist types, used with either distilled, demineralized, or reverse osmosis water will tend to stay cleaner longer.
