Converting furniture to enclosure - sealing

So when converting an armoire or other furniture piece to an enclosure..... What do you treat the wood with to make it more water proof due to your misting system? Ideally I am going to knock out the side panels of an armoire and make it more 'open' with the screening (see pic) or maybe take a book shelf option and add the screening and additional wood pieces, etc. I like the drawers at bottom to 'hide' my drainage system from my raindome.

There are only a few people that I have seen who have done this. As far as I know, there has not been a lot of follow up on long term durability with an armoire conversion. I considered it, but decided it was more pain than it was worth. You can use 3 coats of a spar urethane on all vertical surfaces. For the bottom, consider building up a basin with edges that you can attach a 10 mil back poly waterproofing sheet to. A bar drain assembly makes for a good drainage point. You'll have to core several holes in the bottom and cut out the top and panels in the door for screen. Most armoires or cabinets were only 12 or 15 inches deep. I wanted 24 inches minimum.

Stow the 'tude.
