Colours & Emotions

Hi, I bought a 8 month old male veiled chameleon yesterday. I am wanting to know what emotional state he is in cause he is a dull green/brown overall colour. Under his basking lamp it is 29 deg C and the ambient temp. is 24 deg C. He ate his mealworms and superworms with some crickets yesterday and today the same but not as many. Also when would be a good time to start handling him?

Thanks so much Dave. I just want to know that I am looking after him the best way possible. Will give him about a week or so before handling so he can adjust to his new environment first

An 8 monzh old is a really good start age im sure you will really have a rewarding pet. But please take utmost care of your creature ;) xx

Usually browns and darker browns means they could be stressing but green is a normal color. I waited a couple of days before I started handling mine to give them some time to settle in. Just like dave said though you dont want to force handle them.

aww that was totally cute. Ive had only one tiem when my male actually climbed onto my hand and he climbed up my arm but to only realize i wasnt a stick then he got mad and started hissing at me XD

haha too funny..ya she chases me down when i too close to her tree..then she just chills on me and wont go back..my smallest 3 1\2 month old male ambilobe is starting to do the same..i will post one of him next..

Ya def post one up! I love seeing videos of others chameleons.

Note that is a panther walking right out to perch on you. I dont see too many (if any) videos of veileds doing that. I love my little guy. He is about 10 months old and has an attitude. I will keep working with him, but I know it is going to be hard to get a veiled to be as accepting as a panther.

very true and i have only seen a couple my self..veileds in general are just more of a moody chameleon, ive had the same with female carpet chameleons, and a few flapnecks..my method..is to not stare at them directly..if so only for a sec at a time, especially when hand feeding(they arent as shy if you pretend you arent looking at them)..i offer them food and water at least once a day by hand..and when touch is involved i am usually slow, calm and very gentile to them..im pretty sure they can tell..my newest addition (my lil male panth) is comming around now..he ignores me when i mess with stuff on his home..and when i get his feeding cup out..he follows me around( so he has attached me to good things already, like food water..)

as for veileds..just offer them food by hand feeding..try holding a food item just out of reach but give them your hand to get closer to what you are feeding..its a lil trick to get them on you, and allow them to walk back to there home..after so many times..your cham will just walk rignt on..hungry or not..

heres one that seems to be close to what i explained..but he wasent patient..if he would have waited just a bit longer the cham was thinking about it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQce_YKA100 ( not my vid..just random youtubage)

and here is one after some time bonding with your cham

so after some time..even the ones that seem to be "mean" will calm down eventually..

I will def have to try this one day with the food lure.

it actually does work..and how you react to them, move, and handle them directly affects the chams attitude

like for instance i have a friend that just has no clue how to handle chams and holds her completley wrong..he asks me " why is she pinching soo hard"

its how you are holding her..i try and make it easy for her to walk and balance, when you lean your hand sideways, she squeesing to show discomfort..when im calm and gentile, so are they..

I never have a problem with them pinching me hard XD Someone on here had said I was lucky lol I never ever ever grab them from the back. I also dont try to yank them out of the cage lol. Its almost common sense how that could end bad.

thats what i have always figured!!..i never do anything that would be considered a threat to them ( maybe im half lizard and its just common sense to me, LOL)..
