Chronic eye problem!? Should I take to vet a 3rd time!?

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - Ambilobe Panther, male, 9 months old. Had him since 3 months old, bought at reptile expo from local breeder Cryptic Chameleons. My first cham. He's my avatar (when he was about 7 months old)
  • Handling - Only for vet trips or deep cleaning :( We have not worked up to stress free handling, he is feeding from hand though.
  • Feeding - Diet base is crickets (Gut loaded on fresh mix, primary ingredients are collard greens, mustard greens, sweet potato, butternut squash. And a bit of mango, apple, orange, and carrot. Started Flukers Quencher recently to provide crickets a more dependable water source). Feeding 10-12 crickets every other day, and every other feeding adding a couple of superworms, silkies, hornworms, occasionally wax worms, and dubias when I can get them.
  • Supplements - Calcium without D3 every feeding, Vitamin Supp alternated every other week with the Calcium +D3 (so each every 2 weeks)
  • Watering - Monsoon mister runs while lights are on, off at night. Every 4 hours for 2 minutes. If humidity in room drops too much, I switch to every 2 hours for 30 secs to keep cage humidity more stable. He drinks well.
  • Fecal Description - Dark with nice white urates, although he recently became constipated for 4 days, and just passed a very large poo. Was bit slimy looking and had a urate that was half white and half orange. (will try to post pic, bc why not) Not sure if this is normal after constipation? Waiting to see if his bowl movements will return to normal.
  • History - n/a

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Screen with removable plexi siding on three sides. 18x18x36 Reptibreeze (yes I know this will be small when he gets full sized, there are plans in the works ;) )
  • Lighting - On at 7 am and off at 7 pm. Zoo Med's linear UVB 5.0 and heat bulb is... 60watt? heat lamp bulb by Exo Terra.
  • Temperature - Basking is 85 and ambient runs about 70-75. Nighttime absolute lowest in winter, apartment gets down to 63. Right now, nights stay around 70.
  • Humidity - Lowest to 45, 60 at highest, fluctuates between mistings, 50 average. When summer hits and the swap cooler runs, humidity will hit 70 easy. Plexiglass sidings to help retain humidity in winter.
  • Plants - Half and half. Mostly using fake plants until the pothos grows in more (I have a black thumb).
  • Placement - Medium traffic area. But I live alone... so there isn't much traffic at all... ha! Across from window that I rarley open curtains. Top of cage is about 5ft.
  • Location - Central California

Current Problem - First noticed eye problem around 5 months old I think. He occasionally closed his right eye (just the one, not both) and rubbed it. It seemed better some days and worse others, not consistent. He could open it, just preferred to keep it closed.Took him to vet (reptile vet, although chameleon experience is so-so). Vet said she could not see anything wrong and sent me on my way after questions about husbandry, which she found good. He continued to go through same motions but I figured as long as the eye looks clear when it is open that he might be fine?

Last month eye suddenly got worse, crusted over slightly, and would not open. Made appointment immediately. Same vet office, but saw different vet (vet tech said he actually has more reptile experience than the first). He sent me home with BNP ointment (bacitracin neomycin polymyxin) to apply 3x a day with qtip, to continue a couple days after eye appears better. It was no time in all for him to open his eye. I have a feeling it had more to do with wiping the eye with an ointment than the actual antibiotic effects, but continued as directed. His eye did seem to benefit quite a bit.

Here we are again... No more crust but he STILL keeps rubbing and does not like to open the eye. He will open it when he needs/wants too, like feeding time and the eyeball looks clear. Eye turet looks sunken sometimes/sometimes not, and he does that bulging thing like hes trying to clean sometimes. He hates the mister running, and does not sit under it to clean his eyes. I see no obvious dead skin or debris. He's gone through several sheds and it never sticks around the eyes. Left eye is completely normal. And my Nosey Be (same age, breeder, habitat, etc) has no eye issues at all.

I've debated starting routine showers to force him to clean his eyes, but I know it will stress him a lot. Should I take him to the vet again??? It know vets can only do so much in a cham exam... idk if there is anything they can do?? Ahhhh!!! Please help!

If I do it right... will post pics of bad eye open and closed and one of his post-4day-constipation poop (sorry, lol).

Have you tried vitamin A? I know it's important for eye health in Chams. Buy the gel pills called retinol (spelling?) Cut a pill open and put one drop of the oil onto a prey item. Do this once a month. It really helps eye health in chams.

Thank you! I knew Vit A was essential for eye health, but hadn't heard of using these gel pills. I will look into that. Since there is Vit A in his dusting vitamin, do I need to worry about too much Vit A in his diet, since it's a fat soluble vitamin?

Yup, @Scottsquatch great advice! It is Retinyl palmitate (yup, human medicine from the drug store). Please do not overdose, it can and will harm your chameleon if you do! Check out this thread, there is some real good info there on eye health!

Thanks @Matt Vanilla Gorilla I have actually been reading that thread as well. I had to take a break after page 4 though, lol. The biggest problem I see from the thread, I read a lot about possible Vit A deficiencies and not to give to little or too much. But how much is too much? Since I give Retivite every other week, could he still have a deficiency?? If I pick up retinyl palmitate, how much can I give to my 9 month old boy without harming him? This makes me VERY nervous. The more I read the Eye Health thread the more worried I've become

On similar note, reading the back of my Reptivite... instructions for insectivore says 12 dusted crickets per week for 2.5 ounces of body weight. So could I safely increase his Reptivite to once a week??

Sorry for all the questions, I am so helpless feeling right now :(

What is the exact brand of your vitamin? (if you have a picture, it will help

Zoo Med's linear UVB 5.0
IS this the small one? or the t5ho? (small one is about 10cm, T5ho is a neon of 30cm to.. 100cm i think:p)

Do you use filtered water? sometime.. chameleon can be sensitive about some kind of water and the first affected place is the eye

So too me it can be, vitaminA issue, type of water issue, uvb issue OR the way you clean your cage? do you use any products to clean up the cage/plants? (btw real plant are really cool you should try this :)

Hi @Mawtyplant ! Thank you. And here I thought I rambled too much in my original post, lol

I will attach pic. Reptivite vitamins, Repashy D3 and Reptiles Calcium. Can a Cham really get Vit A deficient even when given a multi Vit every two weeks? That would be scary. My Reptivite says on back it can be used every week. Can I/should I do that?

Ha! Sorry bought that. It is the HO, it's 34inches, spans both cages. Will post pic of the lighting set up. The uvb bulb is coming up 6months in June, so will be replaced soon.

Use DI water in mister. I have a hand mister that I rarely use for supplemental spraying. It is tap water with Zoomed's reptisafe.

I just use water and wipe down for most of cage. Diluted bleach on the screen bottom/drainage tray occasionally since that's where the poops gather. I make sure the rinse and air dry pretty well though... Should I be cleaning with something else?

I have killed several schefflera before giving up on those. I think I've finally found the trick to pothos... Only killed one. Perhapes I will add more pothos. Thank you.

Thank you for the input, it means a lot, I actually had a nightmare last night about this whole thing so waking up and being able to discuss some more helps. I really want to make sure I have everything right.

So... Update. I did end up taking him to the vet again. I probably prematurely freaked out, making a last minute appointment, but I'm glad I did. Last week, he didnt go for his crickets, and I immediately panicked. In hind sight, it appears that he has become picky more than having lost his appetite. I have been using silkies and hornworms as bribery and now he has decided Dubias and crickets are poper's food :p

But the vet did take another look at his eye. She is pretty stumped. She's very confident it is not Vit A issue bc lack of other symptoms. She says the eye ball looks good. It's his turret that's a problem. She called me next day after she contacted a Chameleon specialist, and we are now treating him with eye drops under the hypothesis that it's a clogged... I can't remember the term she used... Nasal tear duct? Drops are neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension... Say that five times fast... Whew! And I got a humidifier to bump his humidity, now keeping it 55-70. And she recommended raising basking temp to 90.

On another note... Can you guys give me advice on his constipation and poop? I wasnt sure if I should start a new thread or not... On my original post I added a pic of his poop after 4 days constipation. Since that day (8 days ago) he has not pooped until this afternoon. It looks similar but really odd. Urate is half white and half orange... The poop is slimy looking and almost rubbery? Is this do to the high number of caterpillars I've been feeding??? I'll post pic

Decal seems normal. Sometimes they dont poop for several days and the middle will be yellow/orange. As long as there is white at the end you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Whew... Ty James... That orange is so vibrant it had me worried. Would you say going a week without pooping is, not abnormal? My nosey be isn't having this issue at all
