Choking Chameleon - Fright of my life!!

Was working yesterday afternoon, and looked up to see Hugo choking violently. Couldn't do much but watch (if i had tried to grab him it would have freaked him out even more) and he then managed to spit out a locust. He seems ok, but I was wondering if there is anything I need to keep an eye out for over the next few days? Is it likely that could cause damage to his mouth or tongue? He has eaten this morning, so that seems ok, but just want to get an idea of what potential problems could arise so if they do I catch them early. :)

Just observe him for following couple of days- make sure that the tiny little bone in his tongue isn't broken- if he eats normally then there is no problem.
And try to give him something smaller to eat next time ;)

Thanks, I will.
And the locust was quite small (ex large, which isn't that big), i think he just took it side on rather than head on, but even then it wasn't broken or anything. Was very strange, as he often eats the adults just fine.

Gosh,i would imagine that would be pretty scary to witness, there was another thread on here a few weeks ago when someones Cham chocked to death right in front of them,it was such a sad thing to read as she was actually on line asking for help as it happened, another thread followed that included some advice on what you can try to do if that happened, sorry i can't remember the names of the threads but i am sure you can use the search button to have a look,i am glad your Cham is O.K

Thanks Ronnie, will have a search and see what i can find. I was getting ready to do chameleon mouth to mouth and rush him to the vets! Luckily, he was able to take care of it all himself!

It was awful Codi, and i really feel for you and the way yours turned out. I was worried that trying to get him out would make it worse, and was waiting for him to pass out as i thought it would then be easier, but thankfully it wasn't required. It was awful to watch. The scary part was that these weren't large locusts, they are the size he always has. Its hard knowing that anything can cause this.

mista has never choked(fingers crossed i'm not jinxing him)but he has scared himself off of adult locusts.he struck two a bit off bullseye and he now shys away from them,so i have i gone back a size.
glad Hugo is fine, you must have been frantic

Update - Yup, he damaged it!

Well, as luck (or rather bad luck) would have it, it looks like Hugo did damage his tongue. When I had seen him eating, he must have reached in to eat. I hadn't seen him use his tongue for a few days, but the locusts have been disappearing. Last night I saw him lunge for a locust and miss, so I tried him this morning with a waxie. He pulled the face he does before he takes them, but didn't extend his tongue, so I do think he's damaged it :(

I have ordered some butterworms and phoenix worms to cup feed him (will be interesting as he has never tried them before). I hope this will be suitable as I don't think I will be able to hand feed him (he hates me so much he won't let me near him). I think if there is no 'improvement' within a week, I will take him to the vets. Assuming he has damaged the tongue bone (will get an x-ray to confirm) how long does this usually take to heal?

My poor little boy :(

Awww, poor l'il man! :( You could try ordering silkworms for him too - they have quite 'sucky' feet and will stick to branches, etc to give him time to pick them off rather than shoot at them. I just received my latest batch yesterday.

I tried ordering silkworms but they were sold out :(. He did grab a locust this afternoon off a branch, so still eating. We'll keep an eye on him and see how it goes over the next week or so.
