My dude likes to chew the heck out of the rim of a terra cotta pot one of my schefflera are in from time to time. it's rather disturbing in sight and sound and I don't want him to harm himself. I decided to put duct tape around the top/rim of the pot..is this safe? I don't know if he will try to chew it or not.. Thanks!

I would be wary of anything with an adhesive of any kind....I know some are benign, but duct tape really sticks....in my experience, the better it sticks the less "ingestible" it is.

Here's a link to the Manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet of a popular "duck" tape (it really was called duck tape at first): http://www.compaccorp.com/pdf/msdspdfs/MSDS T-4B (insul. tapes PL).pdf

While they repeatedly say it's safe in normal use, they also say it contains hazardous chemicals and I have to think "eating it" is not "normal use".

I know of a lot of reptiles that have been harmed by duct tape, the adhesive side will rip off scales.
I would not use it in the enclosure.
How is it better for him to chew on the tape than the pot?

I can't believe I forgot to suggest repotting the plant into a plastic pot...it's not impossible to chew plastic, but it's not nearly as easy as it is to chew terra cotta.
