chameleons head spike - help

Looks to me like he could be burned, as well. The legs look quite straight. But, so hard to tell with those photos. Definitely a trip to the vet, and then take care of those other issues. And be certain the basking spot is not too close to the bulb. That is the problem with a small cage, you only have so much space to work with. In that situation it is best to suspend the basking light off the cage top by so many inches.

It looks to me like he could be BURNED. You have no idea what your temps are? That red light is bad news. The top of his knee looks to be fried. Please immediately substitute that red light for maybe a 60Watt bulb-and get a thermometer so you know what the temps are and get a UVB flourescent tube. This is very serious. Temps should be no higher than 90.

i ment if you dont know of any vets thos are links to
help you find a vet.

i was posting while you were posting.
give thos a good look and depending on where you live you might have one
close by. try to get one who knows chameleons.

oh okay thanks!

i've looked at photo's of them being burnt and he doesn't look like those pictures.

i should get my son to take him out of his cage to get a better picture.

oh do yous take yours out of the cages much?

i so want to get him a new cage..

ok took one more picture. he doesn't want to come out of the cage right now but we tried to get a good one... let me post it

you should get him a new cage.
there are plenty of places to get cages, but i think that
LLLreptile.com is the cheepest. they were having a sale on these cages
(the one you will get 48''x24''x24'') but im not sure if its over.

go to them and also pick up:
calcium WITH D3 (rep-cal){if you dont have one with d3, if you have one
with D3 then get one withOUT d3}
multivitamins (herptivite)
mineral o
Reptisun 5.0 tube 24''
if you want you can get a fixture from them then you can but you can get
one from menards or home depot for cheeper.
i got a 18'' fixture for like $10

a regular house hold bulb will do for basking just watch the temps.

he got scared and has a little black on his belly.. it's gone now :)

the stuff we use to coat the crickets is:

WARDLEY
REPTILE CALCIUM
PHOS-FREE
FOR REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS
(no D3)

i will write that stuff down.. thanks!

can you tell me. do you think his spike will come back? and do you take yours out of the cages much?

i will write that stuff down.. thanks!

can you tell me. do you think his spike will come back? and do you take yours out of the cages much?

i dont know if it will come back or not.
i still dont understand this fully.
did his veil shrink over night or was this a slow process?

you should get the one with D3 then and the multi vitamins.
you can also search threw this website and look around for suppliment schedules.

my cham trys to come out whenever i open my cage.
he always walks out on the end of the screen door.
he is nice.

it just sorta shrunk. i can't remember. sorry

ours is nice too. never bite anyone and i'm happy about that.

thanks for your help.

no problem.

if you can work on getting him to the vet as soon as you can,
and if you can try to get a good picture of his head.
a vet will be the only one who can help you the best because they
will be able to look at the real thing. we can only guesstimate.
give that one link raisingkittytheveiled.... a good read, because it might
fill in any gaps in information you might have.
feel free to ask more specific questions if you are looking for something else.

good luck and keep us updated.

I see in this last photo that he does look like he's lost some of his dorsal crest, as well, just behind the head. That would indicate a burn. I didn't notice, how long have you owned him? It does look as though his body is bloated. A vet will check that out, too.

Hope this helps a bit

You should follow the supplement instructions on this site. Here are some links to the products recommended and used by a lot of people on this forum.

Calcium with D3

Calcium without D3

Vitamins

I noticed and so did a few others. You need some UVB lighting for your little man.

Fixture

Lamp

I also noticed you are using a red lamp for heat. You should change over to a daytime lamp. Your cham will see the light better. I know you said the lights are on for 14 hours. You should try and keep the length of time they are on in sink with the amount of time the sun is actually up. In summer run the lights for 14 hours but go down to 12 maybe 11 hours during the winter. Your cham will get used to the amount of time the lights are on. My boys will 'get ready for bed' about 30-60 minutes before lights out. Also do not provide a 'night time' heat lamp for your guy. If the temp in his cage is dropping below 60 at night you should use a heat coil. Only do this if his temps can't be kept above suitable levels by other means (room heater) at night. Do not use a heat coil as his daytime heater. He won't see it and won't know where to bask.

Heat lamp

As for cages. Your guy will require a 24"x24"x48" cage. These cages were on sale earlier this week... I am bummed I didn't get one in time and they are no longer on sale :( They are worth the money though.

Cage

I know you said you were going to buy a cage. If you did run out to Petsmart or Petco or even a local reptile shop, if you purchased a reptarium, you should buy a higher output UVB lamp for the cage. The meshing stops a lot of the UVB from getting to your cham.

If you did end up at a Petco or Petsmart, PLEASE don't rely 100% on the tips they give you. If I were you, I would come back here and ask the people of the forum questions before making final decisions that could cost you lots of money. Do not let them sell you a compact fluorescent UVB lamp. Please read through the site provided. You will learn a great deal. It is very important to your chameleon that he is provided good lighting in order to thrive and survive.
