Chameleon's eyes HUGE and BULBOUS, but quickly sucked back in?

I observed a new behavior today.
Now, I know that the eyes can balloon when they're cleaning them, and I will preface that my chameleon is shedding...Though, no mister went off anywhere near this time. I was very shocked to walk in the room, look into his enclosure, and see his eyes so disturbingly large.
I couldn't get a photo, but it looked somewhat like this:

I opened the enclosure to get a better look at him, and he slowly sucked them back in.
My assumption, or hope, is that if he "went back to normal" it's not a health problem, but I do know chameleons will hide significant health problems in the presence of others so it's got my head spinning.
Of course...if it was a frightening sort of eye swelling, would he really have control over it?
It was very bizarre to look at. What are you up to, sir?

I observed the same momentary huge eye moment on my young chameleon yesterday while she still had some old dead skin on her eyelid. I think, I hope, it is just some thing they can casually do and not a health issue.
