My chameleon has his eyes closed all the time and he is rubbing . does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? thanks

Is your UV light a spiral (compact) one or a linear (tube) one? Compact bulbs have been known to cause eye problems. Also, how old is he and what type of chameleons is he?

Okay, first off fill out the help info provided in another link in the front of the health clinic section.

That is a very vague description in order to figure out what could be wrong...

Also, newer CFL uvb lightinh is acceptable to use, the first gen cfl bulbs had a very excess amount of what they were putting out which caused problems, newer bulbs I have not ebcountered any problem with the exoterra brand bulbs

What is your basking temp under the light? You basking temp should be around 80-82 and you cage temp should be in the 70's. It sounds like your cage is too hot. you have him in glass which keeps in the heat. Also, as stated before the compact lights have caused eye issues for some members. I would switch your uvb light out to a tube and see it conditions do not improve and what ever you are using for a basking light it is obviously making your cage too hot. You only need a ordinary housebulb about a 40 watt. What are you using and what is the wattage? The majority of us use the Reptisun 5.0 tube but I don't know if that is available to you over in Scotland

I would get some live plants and in there to help with the humidity and ditch the waterfall. They make look nice but chams can poop in them and then drink from the water which breeds bacteria. Not a good thing. also is your calcium that you are dusting with contain d3? If so, you need to get one that does not contain d3 and use that to dust your feeders and use the one with d3 a couple of times a month.

a 6 month old should be in something larger than what you have him in also. A 24 X 24 X 48 or something like a 30 X 36 X 24 is more appropriate. If your cage temp is that hot, than you can only imagine how it must be for him to bask.

I have changed his UV from compact to a tube and lowered the wattage of his basking spot and see if that makes a difference to his eyes

I am glad that you are willing to try and make the change to see if it helps. Good luck and keep us updated!

sooo.....did you change anything that you think made a difference or did he just go back to normal on his own?????

im sorry that this is irrelevant to the thread but i dont know what else to do.
how do i make a new thread? im a newbie to the site and have a real problem with my cham and i think she may be on her last legs. so if anyone could tell me how to make a new thread that would be much appreciated.
thanks

Just go to where it says forums at the top and then it will give you catagories to select. You would probably want health clinic. Click on that and it will say new thread in the upper left. Click on that and you can start typing your thread.

I have changed his uv from a compact to a tube and lowered the wattage of his basking spot from 60 to 40 then he went back to normal:)
