Chameleon Out of Cage Question

Hi Everyone,

Today I left the door of my female veiled chameleon's enclosure open, she went out and explored, but she crawled into a dark space under the corner of a suitcase that I had in the room. She was sitting there with her tail curled up, and I didn't know if something was wrong. She got on my hand but hissed, and then was pretty lively going back and forth between my hands on her way back to her viv.

I want to know if anyone thinks it is a warning sign that she went to curl up in a dark corner. I do have a box of playsand in her enclosure that she has explored and was hoping that if she needed to lay eggs, she would do it there. Any advice?

I do not know exactly how old she is, guessing around 5-6 months. Only had her for about 10 days!

She could have been trying to go to sleep if she was in a dark corner with her tailed curled. She could have been upset that you "disturbed her sleep". My chameleon likes to go in my closet and after he is done exploring he'll climb on top of the books on the shelves and curl his tail and if I move him he'll hiss a little in annoyance. I don't have a veiled though and not a female either so....hope that helped at all.

Thanks! That does make me feel better because it seems likely, she does sleep in the same position when she's in her viv, just on a branch in her leaves.

Im no eggspert on laying bins but I think you should use a sand and dirt mixture rather than sand only.
You may want to look this up, I think there's info on it in the resources section of this site.

Sounds to me like she got lost and scared. Probably got a little bit cold, and grumpy too. I doubt she sought out a dark corner. Imagine if you were suddenly dropped onto an entire new planet. You might do the same thing until you figure it out.
