Chameleon laid eggs

Hello everyone I need some help today,

I just got my first chameleon 6 months ago, which also makes her 6 months, she just laid 50 infertile eggs either last night or this morning saw them when I woke up. , not to sure if I should remove them or just leave them until they start to get moldy? Also I was wondering if I need to take her from her encolser? She is very weak that is why I asked and very clumsy at the moment. I'm very worried since she is absolutely amazing and I do not want to loose her. I have been putting calcium in her mouth along with putting it on her crickets and super worms, and in her water as well so that she is reviving it. Since she is so weak. What do I need to do to help her get back to how active and strong she was. Want to make sure she will be ok, do I need to make her terrarium more safe by adding things to catch her so she doesn't fall off anything.

Please help!!!
Thank you everyone.

Kind regards

Catherine :)

Welcome to the forums and I am so sorry to hear about your girl. She needs to go to a reptile vet with chameleon experience ASAP if you want to save her. Where do you live? I might be able to help you find a vet.

Why does she need to go to the vet? I live in north Palm beach. But why is it that she needs to go to the vet if she has laid eggs?

I just want to officially understand why I need to take her to the vet, she is reviving calcium but please explain so I fully understand. So what you are saying is that she will not get better unless take to the vet?

Is this a liquid calcium or powder? The liquids usually are not sufficient. JannB is rightly worried because weakness is an indication of MBD. A vet can ensure she has laid all the eggs and is not egg bound as well as get you on your way to recovery. Chameleons can be fragile and once they start declining the sooner they get veterinary help, the better.

In the meantime you could fill in the https://www.chameleonforums.com/how-ask-help-66/ form and let the members offer suggestions to improve her care.

No regular powder calcium. And I also put some in her water so I knew she was getting enough. I just want to do the best for my chameleon so if I see she uncomfortable I try to move her so she doesn't fall or hurt herself.

My chameleon is a veiled chameleon, I handle her as much as she lets me if I notice she doesn't want to be held I just leave her alone for the rest of the night.
Her cage is one table 3ft off the floor. She is by an air vent but her temperture in her cage is 83 or 73. She gets 30 large crickets. I give her 30 crickets and put them in her cage when I notice that most of them are gone I give her more and obviously gut load and put calcium on them.

My main concern is what I should do and how to help her get her calcium back up after she laid her eggs. she was perfectly fine before laying the eggs she was healthy and able to hold her own weight very strong. I just want her back to normal her usual self. Moving, fun, strong self. I just need some advice regarding her diet after laying the eggs I have been hand feeding her so that I know she is getting enough nutrients.

She shouldn't be weak after a normal egg laying. Sometimes the girls have problems after laying especially when they are young. I live about an hour north of you and the best chameleon vet is in Marathon, Dr. Doug Mader. I go to him for all serious problems and surgeries.

I just got home and noticed that her arm is alittle swollen, how do I help her arm do I put ice on it to help it go down?

Did she bury the eggs?

As you've already been told, she should not be weak like this after laying eggs.

Putting 30 crickets in and leaving them there is not a good idea IMHO....you're giving her the opportunity to over eat constantly and helping her produce large clutches which is hard on her.

What specific supplements have you been giving her and how often for each? What do you feed/gutload the insects with specifically?

I agree with taking her to a vet ASAP.

No she didn't Bury her clutch she just laid them on top. I usually gut load them with watermelon, lettuce, spinach, pineapple, tomatoes, cucumbers. Just been giving her calcium that's it. Well today I have given her more than enough meaning I put them all over her fruits and veggies her crickets and water since she seems to be very weak. I have read that chameleon do get weak and it takes them 30 days to be there normal selfs after laying eggs. Yeah but I'd rather her eat then not eat at all she's not fat or underweight she is where she needs to be so I think my routine with allowing her to get food whenever she wants is fine since she would have it in the wild.in my understanding she was fine and acting normal before laying her clutch now she is weak and tired after she just laid them this morning.

She should have dug a hole and buried the eggs, filled the hole, tamped it down and returned to the branches hungry and thirsty.

Did she have anywhere in her cage where she could have done that??

It's recommended that insects such as crickets, roaches, locusts, superworms should be fed/gutloaded with a wide assortment of greens such as collards, escarole, endive, dandelion greens, kale, etc, and veggies such as carrots, sweet red pepper, squash, zucchini, sweet potato, etc. Spinach can bind the calcium...so don't use it much.

Does she have exposure to a source of UVB light?

Concerning her eating...she should be fed about about ten crickets or other insects of equal value every second day. Constant over-Eating can lead to MBD, constipation, prolapses, large clutches, etc.

I'm speaking from over 25 years of experience with chameleons and many other lizards, turtles/tortoises, etc. Many others on here have had years of experience too.

Hope your chameleon will be okay.

Yes she had a spot to lay her eggs she had soil and it was in a shoe box since I didn't really expect anything, so the reason why she might have MBD is because of over feeding? So how can I help her? Do I really need to take her to the vet or can I just move her to another cage that is smaller so she can't hurt herself? So that she can become healthy again? Since you know so much can you please help and give me advice on what I should do from now on to help her get better? But isn't it weird that after her clutch she started showing MBD?

Here is a picture of her from before
