Chameleon Just Fell!

10 Celsius = 32 Fahrenheit
That is pretty cold, putting aside the chameleons comfort for a second, how do YOU sleep in those temps? I couldn't stand it! It's - 31 C(-24 F) here and I still have the inside heat at 23 C (73 F) I HATE THE COLD!!!

I would definitely keep a heater in that room, I think both you and your cham would benefit greatly from it;)

Oh yes, and as everyone else has mentioned, no lights at night! Go to Walmart, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, etc. they should have timers left over from x-mas for pretty cheap, I can't say enough positive points for having a timer, they're invaluable! Then if you want to stay out late/sleep-in, you don't have to worry about messing up your chams schedule.

I shivered just reading that its 32. That is FREEZING temps! Im in a sunroom where its reading 68.4 and my hands are frozen! My house stays at 73 too, sometimes warmer if we have a fire going. Yea, how the heck would someone sleep..you have like 4 layers of clothes and 3,000 sleeping bags? Yowza!

Timers are EVERYTHING.. You can find em at any hardware store too..people use em to setup outside lights or any petstore. Mine is ajust a simple timer. they have dual and digital..heck, ebay..even.

That is not right...10C is the equivalent of 50F

Hello NewOwner - well By now you have learned that there should be NO lights on at night so she can sleep.
They will fall occassionally. It is possible you scared her. if she keeps falling, or is not hugging branches or not moving well, see a vet.

Buy a space heater (I like the oil filled rads) that has a timer and a digital temperature guage, this will be $100 or less. Use it to keep the ambient temperature of the room your chameleon is at 16-17C (that's like 61/63F). Once you've done that, you wont need to worry about the chameleon getting too cold at night.
Put your daytime UVB tube and Heat light on timers, set to come on around 6am and off around 6pm (similar to the sun this time of year). check the temps in case having the space heater makes a difference in day (do you have central heating in your home?)

Blackbetty - yes throw a towel over the cage to block your reading lamp.

Thank you. You know, thats a good idea. We have an oil one downstairs for the rabbits that has a timer on it, the little prong things you push down. paid 39.99 at Lowes for it last year and has lasted good thus far.

10 degrees c. = 50 degrees f.
I don't believe this is a problem.
I also use a space heater in the room the chameleons are in but turn the thermostat down to 60 at night.
50's would be fine for a veiled as well.

Has everybody researched night time temperatures in Yemen?
That's where your info and advice should stem from.;)

When I first got my cham, the pet store told me to leave the lights on too and didnt tell me about any schedules either, so if ur anything like me, u have alot to learn to keep a happy healthy cham, luckily u have come to the right place!! There is endless and valuable information on this forum, all u need to do is spend a few hours and a few weeks reading posts. There is also a search function that is very helpful. Good luck!! And please warm up your room, I'd be dead in those temps, I wouldn't ever get out of bed!!!!! How do u survive??? I know I'm in Florida and a little bit of a pansy, but I know even people who live where its cold couldn't be comfortsble in thoses temps!!! Welcome to the forum!!!:D

I thought 50 was okay only for occassional not consistant night temp and that a young one should be kept a little warmer at night and not too hot during the day.
Perhaps I am incorrect (must be, cuz Brad is the expert!)

HA!

Well we are talking about veileds and it is winter.
There is a decent argument that there may not be animals this young in their natural environment at this time of year.
That being said, average low temps in Yemen:

October 13 degrees c. (55.4 f.)
November 10c. (50 f. )
December 10c. " "
January 10c. " "
February 12c. (53.6 f.)
March 15c. (59 f. )
April 16c. (60.8 f.)

Also interesting to note that the average daytime temperature during the winter (October through February) is below 65 degrees f.

How big are four month old Veileds??

Because I saw a couple of 2-3 inchers(body only) when I caught my WC.

Lows in the 30s and 40s this week at that location.

Just thought you might find this info interesting.....

I personally don't find it at all surprising.
These are tough animals.
One of the reasons we see multiple large clutches per year is the unnaturally excellent conditions we keep them in.
According to Ken Kalisch, female veileds, in their natural environment, produce one clutch per year of 10 to 25 eggs.

No, have you? :p

If this is a younger cham shouldn't he be seeing warmer temps at night as he matures due to it being summer and then cooler temps once he has been around a few months and established himself. Aren't chams in the wild hatched in the spring? or is that just bunny rabbits?:confused:
