Revised w/photos - chameleon has a plug at rearend (?) -

Hello,
We are taking care of a male veiled chameleon for two weeks at our home. The chameleon is in its owner's screened enclosure and we have all of their supplies. We have taken care of this chameleon several times before for 1-2 week periods and have had no problems. After the second day of having him, he developed a pinkish/orange/white gooey liquid at his rear-end. It has gotten a little bigger - is about 1/4-1/2" in diameter. At first I thought it was just a weird poop, but I'm starting to worry. My husband thinks it is part of the animals tissue that belongs inside. We are now in the 4th day; it is starting to harden/dry-out. He has not pooped since it started. He is acting/eating normally otherwise. The air temperature is good. He is taking normal amounts of water through an eye-dropper several times a day. We mist him 3-4 times per day. His color looks good - he doesn't act stressed in any way that we notice. He is moving around normally both going toward his light at the top but hanging out lower on a branch - so really, he seems normal to us. But, we just don't know if this is a problem or not. It does not look like the male plug that was described in these posts, b/c it is like a glob, not long and thin. Thanks for any help you can provide - the owners are out of contact, so you can understand that we worry for their animal.

Post a picture of it. It could be a prolaps and he need vet attention right away or it could be something as simple as a sperm plug.

I would take the animal to the vet. Presumably the owner will have left you with the name of their exotics vet. It sounds like it could be a prolapse, which should be given attention immediately. That it is starting to "dry out" suggests, if it is a prolaps, that tissue is dying and may need amputation. Hopefully, its not at all this serious, but, why chance it?

its probably a sperm plug. it should pass within the next couple droppings.

Could I ask what information you used to determine this was the advice to offer?

I agree with Laurie. There were no pictures posted to make that assumption. If in fact it is a prolapse, it can be life threatening.

@chamfriend: That needs to be kept moist and a vet visit ASAP, it's not a sperm plug and does appear to be a prolapse. If it isn't kept moist and it dries out, it will have to be amputated. You can soak it in sugar water to help reduce inflammation and put something like KY Jelly on it to prevent it from drying out and becoming necrotic, while getting him to the vet.

You are so correct Heather, that is my point - people giving advice that is incorrect and could put the life of someone's chameleon at risk.

As has been said, get it to the vet. KY jelly is your friend at this point in time.. hopefully everything goes well.

Just curious, does anyone know what some of the causes behind prolapses are? Not sure if it's just some random occurance or if it has anything to do with diet, stress, humidity, supplements, etc?

Thanks!

Hello all,
Thank you for your responses. We have an emergency clinic/hospital open 24 hours about 10 minutes away from where I live in Pittsburgh. I spoke to them and he is going in about 30 minutes. Thanks again for your time and input.
