Chameleon Going to Bottom of Cage

When a chameleon has MBD you first have to correct the balance between the calcium, phos, vitamin D3 and vitamin A and the at the same time make corrections to the husbandry so it won't return. Usually the damage that is don't such as the bent bones, breaks can't be corrected but the bone health and muscles, etc can be brought back inline.

To bring the calcium levels up in the bones the chameleon will need liquid calcium to be given until the bones are strong again....as well as the husbandry below being used.

It's recommended that you dust the insects lightly with a phos free calcium powder at most feedings...dust lightly with a phos free calcium/D3 powder and twice s month with a vitamin powder with a beta carotene (prOformed) source of vitamin A. We do the dusting so this way to simplify things and make them as safe as possible. Most feeder insects have a poor ratio of calcium to phos so we dust with the calcium to help make up for it. D3 from supplements can build up in the system leading to health issues like MBD so we try to give them some and leave it to them to produce the rest from their exposure to the UVB light we provide. Vitamin A from prOformed sources are safe but ones from prEformed sources can build up in the system and lead to health issues so we use the beta carotene vitamin A powder to be safe. However some chameleons may need some prEformed vitamin A so its up to you to decide if/when yours does and give it some.

It's important to feed/gutload the insects well too. For crickets, locusts, roaches, superworms can be fed dandelion greens, kale, collards, endive, escarole, etc, carrots, zucchini, squash, sweet potato, sweet red pepper, etc and a bit of fruit such as berries, apples, pears, melon, etc.

Appropriate basking temperatures aid in digestion and appropriate UVB is needed to allow the D3 production. For basking you can use a regular household incandescent bulb of a wattage that produces the appropriate basking temperature. The most often recommended UVB light is the reptisun 5.0 long linear tube light.

As @jannb suggested....a hospital setup would be advised so he won't do any more damage as the heal thing is happening. You want a setup where the chameleon can't climb so it won't fall but at the same time has the proper lighting and temperatures.

Hope this helps.

@kinyonga and @jannb did a lot of legwork here, but for my measly sentence, you’re absolutely welcome! It’s great to have new posters here! I hope you and your Cham get some good veterinary help!
