OK, I have had multiple posts on here in the past 2 weeks of owning my first cham. Learning a lot, but she just seems to have gone from healthy to unhealthy... I guess. I don't know. She has gradually been sleeping more and more during the day. I know that any sleeping during the day is not normal at all. But she first started snoozing about 5-6 days ago, small naps. Now, today she has almost slept the entire day through. I just don't know what to do. Her eating has been tapering from 1-2 crickets a day to about 1 every other day. She is drinking, poo has been yellow to white. Ironically, she seems to have went into this decline after her first vet visit:confused: She was fine, took her to the vet, he checked her poo, no parasites, and he gave her a clean bill of health....so much for that I guess. It is bizarre, when I get her out of her enclosure she'll open up her eyes, climb up me about one foot and then just lay down an sleep. Then she'll wake up climb some more, then sleep. I swear it's almost like narcolepsy. She has a good firm grip, not weak at all. I want to note that she is currently in an aquarium, I know this is all wrong and I have a DYI cage 18x18x36 on order, it is coming tomorrow. She has been living amongst fake plants for the 2 weeks I've had her, but those will be replaced with live Arboricola in the new screened cage. Also want to say she sleeps in complete darkness all night so she should be getting ample, undisturbed sleep. I just feel like a failure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Senegal, Female, 6-8 months of age.
Been in my care about 16 days
Handling - I handle her once a day for about 10-15 minutes at the most just so I can clean her cage out if need be.
Feeding - Currently feeding her crickets fed with flukers High calcium cricket diet, feeding her 1-2 every other day, dusting with calcium with no D3, doing the D3 twice a month and multi-vite twice a month.
Watering - Using a dripper system and heavily misting entire enclosure 4-5 times per day. And I do see her drinking
Fecal Description - Droppings look brown with a pure white to yellow
History - See above

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Enclosure is all glass sides and a glass bottom ( it is technically an aquarium, and I know I need to get something with ventilation, I let the people at the pet store sell me this) Has a screen top and is 16WX24LX16H
Lighting - Basking bulb is 75watt Exo Terra Brand and the UVB bulb is a 5.0 spiral type exo terra. She is getting about 13 hours of UVB and basking per day. Turn them on at about 8am in the morning and off at 9 pm
Temperature - Range is about 75 at the floor, 80-85 mid range and bask
These are measured with a digital thermometer
Humidity -Is about 20-40 peaking at 70 percent right when I mist, measured with a digital hygrometer. I mist often to maintain these levels and leave a tiny amount of water upon the glass bottom of the enclosure which I clean out nightly.
Plants - I am using ivy type fake plants. Currently no live plants.
Placement - Enclosure is located in my living room, high traffic, Top of the cage is probably not near high enough at about 4 1/2 feet off the ground.
Location - Located in Newark, Ohio, U.S.A.

Oh, man! I hear ya! Yeah I was reading your post earlier hoping to get some insight too. I am just getting frustrated. I'm really starting to wonder if it's my UVB light. I have a Reptisin 5.0 CFL type. I'm reading a lot of things saying that spiral type bulbs have been known to cause eye damage. Of course I read some other things saying they corrected the problem. I'm about to weigh on the side of caution and get a tube type 5.0 bulb. Also, this stupid enclosure the pet store set me up with has the UVB only like 7 inches or less from her face. It's my fault for not doing the research before I got her.

Been in my care about 16 days Where did you buy this chameleon? Can i see pics of the chameleon?
Handling - I handle her once a day for about 10-15 minutes at the most just so I can clean her cage out if need be. Id cut back on the handling until she is out of the woods. Leave her be even if your cleaning the cage. Clean around her :)
And I do see her drinking This is very good. Be sure that the cage is able to dry out between sessions.
Fecal Description - Droppings look brown with a pure white to yellow I strongly recommend you taking a fresh stool sample into another vet. I can bet she is wild caught.

Turn them on at about 8am in the morning and off at 9 pm Im not a fan of the spirals. They have said to have fixed the issues linked to eye issues but i still dont play games with them after having seeing this first hand. I would recommend getting rid of this bulb as soon as possible as this can be a contributing factor in your chameleon sleeping.

These are measured with a digital thermometer How do you have the 75 watt bulb situated on this tank to provide temps stated? what are your room ambient temps? a 75 watt in a 20 gallon or smaller is going to cook your little girl.

Based on what you have provided. I would start with
1. changing the uvb bulb to a fluorescent
2. re check your temps with that 75 watt
3. getting a second opinion on your stool sample with a vet that sees herp.

Great! I got her at a Pet Supplies PLus Store here in Newark, Ohio. I will post a pic up in a few. I originally had a 50watt light, I'll drop back to that. I have cut back on handling too. Getting the tube type bulb tomorrow. As for the vet I tend to agree with you, I guarantee she was wild caught, but he knew a lot about Chameleons and specializes in Herps. Stool was fresh and he saw no signs of parasites. Might get second opinion though.

Ok, the first pic was 2 days ago. She was opening her eyes a lot more then. She is sitting in the Arboricola plant I bought for the new enclosure coming tomorrow. I sit her in this when I'm cleaning her cage. The 2nd pic is her enclosure. I know it is not even remotely adequate. New tall, mesh cage coming tomorrow. 3rd is a pic of her a minute ago. She is sleeping and the pic is through the glass so it looks like crap. I just don't want to stick my phone in there and disturb her further to get a better one.

her life is going to depend on your swift action. take my three suggestions seriously and get that stool sample done urgently.

typically two things...your chameleon is hot or has an respiratory infection.

scroll down to respiratory infection and look at symptoms to see if they pertain to you.

Hmmm, yeah I have heard about the crackling / wheezing thing when they gap can be respiratory problems. But honestly I have heard nothing when she does that. I'm thinking too hot probably. I had a 50 watt bulb when we first started out and I went to a 75 watter recently. This could be the problem.

Thanks so much by the way!

your welcome. lets hope we can figure out whats causing hardships...please keep us updated.

Defintly will update soon. I'm hoping the new enclosure and live plants help her out.
I was reading an interesting thing a while ago stating that Chams closing there eyes, often in your presence, and refusing to move can be "Stressful subordination"? I found her with her eyes open a few times today, only to see them close when I got too close. Any thoughts?

I think this is a rare thing and have never personally witnessed this but i think it can happen. just from the looks of your chameleon though...im going to say she has a heavy parasite load. wild caught, declining appetite and eyes closing are enough for me.

No one commented on him feeding 1-2 crickets every other day. Is that all that is being offered or all she will eat?. If it is all you offering, that is not near enough food.

That's all she'll eat for me right now. And honestly it's more like 1 every other day. Now I was told 1-3 per day was plenty by other Senegal owners.

I honestly don't know who to trust on this issue. I know of one other herp vet in the area and who's to say if they know what they are talking about. Seems like this happened aweful quick to be a parasite issue but then again I don't know much about the parasites they get.
