cham eating dirt

So, earlier today I was surprised with a peculiar noise coming from my chameleons cage. He was moving the river rocks I had put over the soil, and then proceeded to eat some of the dirt. I am big on letting him do his own thing, but this was something I had been trying to prevent him from doing. I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with this sort of stubborn behavior as far as eating dirt goes. Also, how much harm can come from eating dirt (yes I understand it can cause impaction), and if anybody happens to know what causes them to est dirt in the first place. Thanks for your time!

As long as you use organic soil it should be ok. I would try to cover it up better if it gets to be too much.

what supplements regiment are u using right now ? maybe hes not getting enough vitimins or w/e else and is why he is eating the soil
