Care of kinyongia oxyrhina

Just want to give everyone an update on the male that died. His fecals were clean, so there were no apparent worms, however I had a necropsy done and Dr. Stahl found 2 large roundworms. Multiple fecals tests would have been necessary, but the little guy didn't live long enough for the worms to cycle through a stage where they could be found in the fecals. The worms were not the cause of his death, but did obviously play a role. He also had no fat reserves whatsoever and with the stress of the transport, the worms, and lack of body fat reserves, it was too much for him. Unfortunately, Dr. Stahl said there was nothing that could have been done for him.

The girl is being treated for roundworms and her fecals will be tested multiple times following completion of the treatment to be sure that she is clean.

According to Dr. Stahl, the boy was almost sexually mature, so assuming the female is close to the same age the boy was, she should be ready to be introduced to the male I got from showjet95 soon (of course I'll wait until her fecals have been cleared to be sure no nothing can be passed to the male).

Just want to update everyone on the pair... they're doing great, the girl is starting to show some nice green coloration and getting a bit fatter now that the deworming has been done. I'll try to get some new pics posted soon.

I have made several attempts to get them to breed, putting them in the bright sunlight, however the male is showing no interest in her. He did walk over to her at one point and got behind her, but then turned and walked away :-(. She did not try to move away, so she does appear to be receptive right now... I will keep trying, but if anyone has suggestions or tips to try, let me know!

Sounds to me like the male could use some practice on the ugly girls first. Ha!

If she let's him get near without any biting or gaping then I bet he's just not in the mood yet. I would try to give him some time in the sun and plenty to eat and drink. What are you gutloading your feeders with? Do they show a preference for a specific feeder?

She didn't do anything when he got near her (no gaping or biting, not even moving away) - the sad part was, neither did he ;-)

Gutloading with various fruits and veggies (always switching them out... sweet potato, red bell pepper, carrots, summer squash, green beans, dandelion greens, arugula, kale, banana, apple, orange, mango, papaya), occasionally some unsalted raw nuts. Lightly dust with calcium w/o D3 a couple times a week, multivitamin every 6-8 weeks (don't like to overdo that with the montane species - this has worked well with all my Jacksons).

Feeding crickets, small silk and hornworms, occasionally hydei fruit flies (my own gutload) and small wild-caught moths. Till now, both the male and female prefer the worms, but eat pretty much anything I put in there.

I get them outside anytime it's sunny, the temps are ok, and I'm home, which is almost every day.

Cainschams, thanks for the link! I do some simple cycling - changing temps, humidity, and light/dark cycles to try and match the seasons, but haven't been as precise as Trace. I will start doing it more diligently and see if that helps him become more interested.

I'll get some pics over the weekend and post them

Congrats on having such beautiful Ks!! Looking forward to seeing more pics and some babies...

It has been suggested in the literature that K. oxyrhina is only stimulated to breed under bright, high intensity sunshine. I believe Necas talked about it in his book. Might be worth reviewing and giving a try.

They breed under artifical light too. But in general, natural sunlight is good for nearly all chameleons.

Here are a few pics I took today... I'll see if I can get some better ones in the next few days

They look great!!! Id go with cycling them and random breeding attempts. If they do not breed by the end of spring definitely try to use some of that summer sunshine to try and trigger them.

You got any tips, Benny? When the hell are you sending me some CB Kinyongias?

I miss that guy!:) Hes super tough so I knew he would do great for you. Did the very tip of his rostral fall off? and have you seen him fire up yet? I reallly hope something comes from these two! *fingers crossed*

Showjet - the tip of his rostral is still there, it just doens't show up in that picture due to angle/coloring. I haven't really seen him fired up yet, but showing some nice colors anyway :)

Here are a few more pics taken about a week or two ago, I thought I'd posted them, but apparently not. The male pic was taken shortly after lights out, so instead of shying away from the camera, he just accepted it - made for a great shot. I'll try to be better about posting pics more frequently from now on...

I miss that guy too!!!! I never messed with his rostral. There would be stuck shed on it and me trying to pick it off is much more stressful on him than just letting it fall off:eek:
