Can someone point me in the right direction?

I purchased a Veiled Chameleon along with what the Pet Store girl told me I needed. I did not do research on my own about what it was the Chameleon needed and I feel like a dumby for it. Needless to say I have learned from my mistake but my buddy has to go back to see the vet and truthfully, I don't think I will take him back. I know that sounds a little harsh but I would like to know that I am getting a perfectly healthy pet when I get him. I also want to make sure I have the proper equipment for him/her when I get him/her.

I pretty much want an opinion on a few things if ya'll dont mind.

For the setup is it better to go with something off of diycages or lllreptiles? And what are the differences?

Does anyone know where I can find a breeder in my area? I live in south Orange County, CA but I don't mind to travel a little ways of course.

Also, which would be better, Pothos or Hibiscus?

I understand that some of these questions might just be matter of opinion, but, if more people like DIY better then most likely I would too ;)

Thanks ahead of time!

So wait a minute, you have a sick chameleon on your hands because you did NOT do your research and now you are not going to get it help and are going to let it die? Am I reading this right????????????

Ok, well....

What I would find a "turn off" about the DIY cages is that unlike some others the bottom part does not swing up and I can tell you I have 2 cages and one the bottom swings up allowing easy and quick cleaning... the other is a pain to clean because getting to that area is tough and so IMO I'd look for a cage that the bottom opens up. You can also check out Habitat designs cages.

As for plants Pothos are hardier Hibiscus can be hard to keep as they need lots of light....

Kammerflage is a great breeder located in CA. And you can buy a complete set up from them.... this will ensure you have exactly what you need for a healthy Cham this time around! Good luck!

Carol - No, I bought the pet from PetCo, and if the pet is sick within a certain time they take it to their vet and they nurture it back to health and then PetCo sells again with giving me the option to buy it back, however, from everything I've read PetCo doesnt even care for them properly, so instead of me purchasing him back, I would like to purchase one from a breeder after I have the most proper of setups. Of course I would hope that he is purchased and loved and cared for properly, but I want the assurance that I RECEIVE a healthy pet to begin with. I think he was sick/getting sick when I got him.

Thank you!! I will def look into Kammerflage and I will get the Pothos, as for the cage, that sounds muchhhhh easier, I'll look at Habitat Designs as well. =]

I would recommend what Gensen said. I would call the breeder and see if he would work with you getting everything set up. The biggest thing I can recommend is just read a lot on here. The search function at the top is amazing. If you have a question in the future about your chameleon, search for it. Most likely it has already been talked about.

You seem to be doing well so far. Screen cage, live plants, and going through a breeder. I just got some pothos and He seems to like it better than when I had a hibiscus.

ok! sorry!!! Sorry you got off on the wrong foot with petco and now you want to make sure you do the right thing this time! Gotchya!!!! I think the other members answered your other questions so I don't need to repeat info. Good luck with this one and you have come to the right place for all the info you need about how to care for your chameleon properly!

he is a cute guy. you will find that these forums are going to be your go to place to information. Don't listen to pet stores, a large majority of the time they don't really know what they're talking about. This place is awesome! lol

He sure doesn't look to good, a good thing to take him back but I have a doubt the poor thing would get treated well. His eyes are a bit sunken and his casque is way too thin.

I know, I def wanted to do what I could when I saw him looking so sick one day after work. I fear that I wont be able to make him right quickly enough as I am not a vet. I will def take him back today and hope that the vet they have will treat him well, although that is out of my control. His eyes look even more sunken in today and those pictures were taken yesterday. One of his back legs looks a little bit funny to me as well and reading some stuff on here I see that could mean MBD. Anyways, I do hope for the best for him, I just don't want to START off bad with my cham.
