Hey guys i have a nasty cold and have been trying to keep my hands and arms clean when doing things with my chameleon.

Im wondering does it matter, i know im not being over precautions, ill still always clean my hands first when caring for her, but i want to know if i can get her sick....

I really hope not cause im sure my germs are all around in her room, with little i can do about it.

Thanks

Just keep clean, wash your hands before and after handling and you should be ok.

yes i figured as much thanks, does anyone know for sure though can you or cant you get your cham sick, im googling as well, not coming up with much.

You will be more likely to transfer your cold to your dogs and cats than to your chameleon.

However, there are some diseases that you can share with him or vice versa (parasites are one of them).

Just wash your hand well before and after handling your chameleon business as a practice of good hygiene even when you are not sick.

yes thats why i said i always clean my hands anyway, i have fish, spiders, scorpions, and lizards so i can never not wash my hands, lizards dont take kindly to tarantula hairs. i meant mainly just airborn stuff is it an issue..

good to know its unlikely, thanks

The common cold originally mutated and transferred to humans from birds and can be shared between the two types of critters, so if you have a parrot, stay away from it when you have a cold and vice versa.

Lizards are farther back on the evolutionary tree and I have never heard of, nor can I find, any information based on transmission of the common cold between lizards and humans. Since there is a dearth of such information I would assume there is no known case of such happening. Fungal infections, parasites, and salmonella can be transmitted as well as bacterial infection from dirty cages and hands. Since you wash your hands often as I do, you are unlikely to tranfer such infection to your exotic pets and less likely to infect yourself with whatever the pets might carry.
