calci worns

Hi,

I'm collecting some calci-worms from the pet shop today & I was wondering if they are an ok staple or are they fatty like wax worms? Can I feed in conjunction with Neelix's daily waxworm?

The little terror is being picky about his food this week.

Calci worms are better for Neelix than waxworms. It's not a good idea to fed waxworms on a daily basis as they are quite fatty, and can lead to chams refusing to eat anything else! They can be fed as a on occasional treat though.

Ah, that explains his refusal to eat his locusts and crickets! He's been training me to give him wax worms lol

They aren't daft! Monty really LOVES his woodlice, and I know he wants them as he refuses everything else I offer - he has a choice of dubais, crix, locusts, silkworms and mealies and he won't eat any of them, but I am not giving in!

It's like having a kid lol

Well, I'll feed the waxworms to my axolotls- they love em too but aren't smart enough to refuse other foods!

Phoenix worms have always been a favorite of my veiled I always went large on them so she could bite into them because I've heard of them pooping out whole in adult chams. Wen they turn black they're supposed to be higher in calcium btw not dead. And don't give in lol!

oh, ha! I'd been chucking out the black ones. I was just looking at pictures &they look pretty much the smae as wax worms- will he be fooled?

They go really dark before they pupate, and as already mentioned, their calcium content is better the darker they are. I had a tub in the cupboard that I forgot about as Monty wasn't interested  and one day I heard a strange noise and they had cocooned and emerged as lack soldier flies! I tried to breed them, but that wasn't successful. Monty did eat one in fly form though, but by then all the best of the goodness has gone!

Idk they are pretty smart but I'm sure hell love the calcium worms and if he is still a skinny runt he may need some fat from a wax worm but no more than one a day and try to go a day or two without them is what id say.

So the flies are okay to feed off? Mine just seem to die after a few days of being black.

sound advice. He certainly has filled out in the past week or so, I only managed to get him start eating the wax worms last week. Time to cut back on them, I think.

I had a load of waxworms pupate when I first got Neelix- I didn't wait for them to turn into flies cos I was still pretty squeamish about them.

Yes I would cut back to maybe one a week, what is his age? Then as an adult id only offer them as a "treat" or just not offer them at all.

Got the calci-worms, I ordered small ones cos the petshop couldn't tell me how big they are- they're far too small, but I know for the next time.

What do I gutload them with?

If they came in there own cup with tabacco looking stuff just leave them in there and be sure that it stays moist and doesn't dry out. I got the smallest ones I could the first time and I never saw any come out whole in my cham and she gobbled up 20 of them just sitting there zapping them up like she would wax worms but never saw any come out full bodied and they were tiny tiny.

he ate like 4 of them but then my hand got tired of holding the cup lol I wanted to put it on the bottom of the cage but they would have escaped

I use a seperate Tupperware for my worms and another for my roaches and crix they don't seem to escape if the crix escape more fun for Camille:)
