Is it a bad idea to use sticks and stuff from outside for the cage?

nope. Just make sure to at least give them a good rinse, removing loose bark, debris and bird poo!
I use a little dish soap and soak them for a bit, then rinse well with hot water. I have seen other members use a 10:1 water to bleach solution also. just be sure to rinse well when done cleaning.
