I'm taking pre-orders for buckeye butterfly larvae. I'm not sure that I will be able to have the media made in time to make cups, so they may need to be fed some of their natural host plants. I will try to get it done in time so that they will come in cups for your convenience. They will come in pre-made cups with or without media depending on if I have it available.
They are very easy to take care of, just watch to make sure everything remains clean/mold free. Keep the cups lid side up and keep the filter paper in place. When the larvae become pupae on the filter paper, pin/tape the filter paper into the emergence container (a container that is big enough to allow them to dry their wings. It must be at least 3"x3") Allow the pupae to hang with several inches of room below them. If the walls of the container are smooth, put a few twigs in the container for any butterflies that happen to fall. If they do not have a place to hang from, they will not form their wings correctly and they will be deformed. Once the butterflies have dried their wings, they are ready to be fed to your reptiles, or whatever else you want to do with them.
The butterflies have a wingspan of around 2" at the most, so even smaller chameleons can eat them. Their bodies are the size of a 1/2" cricket but it is much softer. If the chameleon can eat a 1/2" cricket it should be able to eat these butterflies with relative ease.
I am selling 16-20 smalls for $8 which will be ready in a week or so.
Special envelopes can be purchased so that you may store the adults in the fridge if you want. They allow the butterflies to breathe while still keeping them contained in such a way that they will not damage their wings. These are 5 for $1
1-3 day shipping is free, but if your temps are above 80 degrees, I cannot guarantee live arrival unless you pay for insulation and ice packs. It's an extra $2 to do so.
If you are interested in obtaining some of these larvae or have any questions, please email me at [email protected]
EDIT: I can send a live, rooted (bare root,) organic host plant for free if I do not have the media prepared. Just let me know.
