Current Problem - Bullseye is my 10yr old sons pet. We set everything up last September when we got him with help from the breeder and this forum. I have helped him for the most part but I'm afraid I didn't catch some tell tale signs and he looks like he is dying.

We were feeding only crickets and added roaches about 6months ago. We would put the roaches in a small clear plastic glad container, about 2" deep, and leave about 8 half inch roaches in it daily. He would go get them whenever he wanted.

We started to notice, about 3 months ago, that he would get to within about an inch of the cricket to catch it and not shoot out his tongue(my son named him bullseye because of the way he used to nail crickets with his tongue!) I assumed it was because he was used to getting the roaches from the cup.

I then realized last week that he didn't seem to be eating. I had checked the room, after lights out, and noticed a lot of crickets and roaches all over the screen in the dark. I then noticed he was finding branches to lay his head on while he slept. He looked like he was using the branch to support his head.

When I came home from work Thursday night the kids said Bullseye had fallen a couple of times. He wasn't hurt but he was very lethargic and didn't have the strength to hold his head up.

Last night and today he has no strength what so ever. I scoured these forums last night and inspected him again. unfortunately, I am pretty sure he has not been eating and is severely underweight(I have no way to weigh him) his ribs are protruding. I was able to get about 6, half inch roaches and 2 crickets in him with the tongs and then about 10 more roaches this morning.

I have found him just laying on the bottom of the cage twice today. We took him outside in the warm sun, after he ate, for about 30mins.

He is also hanging straight down using his tail and rear legs. His eyes are very alert and clear and he is looking around with no problem. He just has no energy or strength to even hold his head up. I took one of those triangle shaped green reptile hammocks and secured it across the fake vines, kinda like a bed, I laid him on it and he stayed laying flat for about 10mins before he slowly lowered himself down to hang from his rear legs and tail.

I called a reptile vet this morning but they were overbooked today and they gave me an emergency # to call. I have left two messages and they haven't called back yet.

I have learned that we should have been dusting vitamins too and it looks like we haven't been giving enough calcium? Do you think he has a calcium deficiency which led to him not being able to use his tongue?

Should I keep force feeding him small roaches or is there a liquid mix I can make and feed him through a syringe?

His eyes are so clear and alert that it gives me hope that he is not "sick" but starving.

Please help, I am determined to right my wrong and save this beautiful little guy. He also just got his full colors and they are amazing. I have pics from this morning on my blackberry and I will try to post them from my berry.(any help on that would be appreciated!)

In addition to the calcium with Vit D3, most people also use calcium with no D3 about 4 to 5 days per week.
Get him to a vet ASAP and start using the plain calcium right away.

I'd contact the member JustJumpIt621. She knows how to force feed/hand feed chameleons, because she had to do that for one of her chameleons who passed away a few months ago. She can probably help you out with what to do until Monday.

Mr.Wilson thank you I will try to contact her. FSTRESCUE I replied to your pm.

Bullseye has been laying flat on his side on the hammock for a few hours. He is still looking around and his eyes are still clear and alert.

Maybe some pictures can help others get an Idea of what you might be looking for/treating?

OK. I am new on the forum, but have studied the forums when we first got bullseye, I have 2 pictures saved under "manage attachments' but I cant figure how to post them. i have more pics on my blackberry.

Try dowloading them to photobucket, or a similar site and use the IMG tag to post the picures here.

Liquid calcium gluconate or sandoz might help until Monday's vet visit...you can buy it at the pharmacy. Make sure it has no added vitamins/minerals though.

Don't use "quick reply"...click on the REPLY button, then click the icon for attachments (paper clip) ...that will open your saved attachments as well as giving you the option to add something new.

He layed on his side sleeping on a lizard hammock, we installed yesterday, all night long. I didnt think he was going to make it but he seems a little stronger this morning. I gave him pedialyte and liquid calcium every 3hrs all night long. I also just fed him 4 small roaches.

this is my first try at posting pics. This is Bullseye yesterday on the deck.

First off he is outrageously skinny (just to confirm) his legs look like toothpicks :/

If you were not dusting with calcium w/o d3 at feedings, most likely he has MBD or a mineral/vitamin deficiency

If that is not the outstanding reason... it would guess parasites? have you had any fecals done?

He obviously needs to go to an experienced specialist vet... but from the looks of things right now you don't seem to have lots of time mate.

I wish I could help further, and I hope someone chimes in soon to help further..

P.S - why was he vent open during that upside down picture?

Have had no fecals done. Going to reptile vet in morning, if he makes it through the night. He just finished pooping in the pic which is runny because of the pedialyte.

I'm not an expert, but his joints don't look right to me. Hopefully the vet will have a lot of experience with chameleons and be able to help. I suspect some emergency calcium treatment is in order. Please let us know what happens. He's a very sweet looking chameleon.

I took Bullseye the Avian and Exotic Animal care of Raleigh, NC this morning. The vet said she thinks he has a 50-50 chance. They will give him vitamin, calcium shots and fluids and place him in an incubator in their hospital. We are keeping our fingers crossed for him and I deeply regret not catching this sooner and taking him for professional care.
