QUESTION:

Anya has been rubbing her eyes on the branches and screen of the cage and then bulging her eyes out, It is kind of gross to watch. She has been keeping her eyes closed more often then usual. But Squints them when she needs to. She still is eating 5 large mealworms a day and 5 large crickets a day. I misted her extra today hoping maybe she just needed to clean her eyes out....... IM TALKING LIKE SIZE OR A MARBLE....SHE PUSHES HER EYE UNDER THE SKIN AND BLOWS IT UP LIKE A BALLOON!

-Underneath her eyes looks a little purple or darkened color, Im guessing its due to rubbing her eyes so much!!!!!

I know shes not dehydrated from her fecal color...BUT I AM NOT AN EXPERT ON REPTILES!!!!!!!!!

they bulge their eyes out to clean them, thats fairly normal. she may be rubbing her eyes on things because there is something in them, part of a shed if she recently shed, a piece of dirt off of the fake plants which would be another reason why she would be bulging them. they may be irrated if she poked them on the edge of a fake plant also. this is my take on this, but more experienced keepers will chime in with what they think, she may have an eye issue going on.
also, she does not need a light when sleeping unless the ambient temp is dropping beneath 60 degrees fahrenheit at night. light at night disturbs their sleep badly

extra long mistings more often especially gentle misting on her face might help her clean out whatever is in that if that is indeed what is bothering her, so youre on the right track if thats what it is

Thank You!!!! :)

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

The Pet Store had told me to use a light at night so i just went along with it!!!!!

But I will keep misting her and hopefully her eyes clear up if that is the case!

I think i just might be paranoid for no reason! lol

your very welcome!
have you tried the shower technique before?
youre not being paranoid, her keeping her eyes closed during the day isnt normal, somethings going on in there we just have to figure it out and do what can be done for her hopefully others will chime in soon too with their thoughts, the more information the better!

I haven't tried the shower yet! but that does seem like it would be a very effective technique...with her symptoms

I will set a rainforest up in my shower in the morning and repost the effects tomorrow afternoon!

sounds great, remember what you want to do is set it to a warm spray, and direct the spray at the wall so that it will bounce off the wall onto the plants and your girl and it will be much more gentle :) pics of her eyes would help alot too that way we could see what they are looking like

Could you please post a picture of her eyes?

Like others said, I think it may be a piece of shed she is trying to clean out or get rid of.

I would try the shower thing and to keep her humidity a little higher until the problem goes away. :)

But please attach a picture?

She's Sleeping so i cant get a good photo right now!!!!

What i have is of her sleeping...but now i'm terrified because i think her eye looks sunk in

welcome, and you have come to a good place to get help. First it would help if you would copy and paste the questionnaire on your response and then fill in your answers. This helps answer the basic question which you tried to do but missed A LOT. You will need to get a temp of basking, middle and bottom of cage. then change at night. Very important to know these so please get a thermometer. what brand, and type and strength of UVB light are you using and on what schedule? No light at nigh. you can use an emitter if temp drops below 60F(need to know no guess). Need more info on feeders, gutloads, and schedule and names of supplements.

With all this said it looks like it is time to take her to the vet ASAP. Would help vet to have this info and possibly a fecal while your at it.

Totally thank you for all the help everyone i have a mobile reptile vet coming to my house tomorrow morning around 10am

i should have more updates on Anya around tomorrow afternoon!

The Vet just left, he believes she has a vitamin A deficiency and he gave me vitamin A drops to giver her 2 times a day for 2 days and then once every week.

Vitamin A is responsible for eye function! and because the symptoms were in both eyes and not just one... suggested it had to be a internal problem(vitamins, nutrition, ect.) ...instead of an external one (such as something stuck in her eye, scratches, ect.)

He checked out my set up and recommended live plants!

He also recommended to gut-load my crickets with the brand Cricket Crack! Or feed them fruits and vegetables! Which will have all the right nutrition for her.

Other then that the vet believes she looks pretty healthy and strong and should be ok in the next few days!
