I always show the female to the male by holding her outside the male's cage so they can see each other but not get to each other and watch the reactions.
If the female remains calm and walks slowly away from the male then she is likely ready to mate. The male should not respond with aggression but will likely bob his head at the female, brighten his colors and move towards her.
If they both behave appropriately then the female can be put into the male's cage. I keep an eye on them to make sure there aren't any sudden bad reactions. If all goes well, the female can be left in the cage until she shows signs of rejecting the male (colors turn dark, she hisses, gapes and sways back and forth, etc.).
