My 3 month old male veieled chameleon has been spending a lot of time black on the roof of his cage. He stands under the UVB light and climbs on the dripper tube. I will post pictures soon.

Why is he doing this and is it bad?

Them being black is bad. He is either cold or very stressed. Hanging on the top of the cage under a light indicates that he is cold.. Until people see pictures they could probably help more

Him being cold was my first theory. His cage is ambient 73F and basking 83F. I figured that was not cold.

About the stress thing, he is black even when people aren't around.... I don't get it. He likes walking around on the roof, which isn't bad, but it seems like if he is on the roof, he is always black...

You need to fill out the information sheet. You will also need to have pictures.
Uhm..until then Idk

Of course right now when I want him to do it, he won't so I cant get a picture.....

How dumb am I?? I forgot to post the age.

He is three and a half months.

Your not dumb:p
My chameleon at that age and never was black. He got lines of black from stress at points. He is now 6months :p

Um sure hope its nothing serious

Our Veiled is about 3 months old. Durring the day he is dark, but not completely black. The temps and humidity are good. About a month ago we moved him to a bigger terrarium with new plants and vines. The vines are darker so I didn't think much about it. When he's dark he doesn't really show his stress spots? When his light goes out and he goes to sleep he is very light and will show more colors?? Anyone have any suggestions why he does this?

Dark colors absorb heat:p That explains it for me but could not be the problem

Maybe the word "black" is being too harsh. He is actually a dark gun-metal grey when he does this, but definitely dark grey! Also he gets very thin side stripes of lime green and his "dorsal stripe" (the stripe going down his back) and his mouth outline are bright yellow. When he hangs from the top of the cage like this, he drop down into a "cat pose" where he is arched away from the top. As soon as he gets to his basking light he turns green again. My mom has seen him walk away (while green) from his basking light, go turn black, and then come back to the basking light and turn green again! He does it at least once a day AND at certain times of the day.

I say its now stress. My cham gets lines of black, yellow, brown, bright lime green, and even white when stressed.

So you mean his whole body isn't "black"? Just he is very dark up there? Then I say its something stressing him. You changed anything lately?

No, his entire body is black. From nose to tail and top to toes. Except for the thin stripes of color I explained. He also becomes "skinny" when he does this.

how high up is the top of the cage? If you are taller than the top of the cage and he cant get above you it may stress him out. That might explain crawling on the top screen.

The top of the cage is eye level. We could raise it...

Here is a pic.

Here is a regular pic for reference

maybe he hasnt gotten the concept of basking area? (im new to chams so i dont know if this happens)... but maybe he is just learning where the warm place is located...maybe he is cold when hes not by the basking area.... just a thought... i dunno... can anyone else chime in?

Hmm your cham doesn't display stress colors when you handle it? I find it odd the colors look fine when you have it in your hand and in its enclosure it's black.. Maybe it is sick or something

He displays no other signs of illness. He eats great, he sleeps great, he is a nice pretty green when he sleeps, his feces and urates are fine. This is the only "off" thing he does.
