black spots on the skin

My boy Lizzie, around 1.5 years old, eating and pooping normal since March I got him, and always active, eyes are normal.

Tonight newly found black spots on his back, tail, “knee” of every limb, and some around his mouth. Didn’t notice anything this morning when I head out.

Glass tank, 10 gallons, a real plant inside with the cricket box, always misted and humid (might be the reason).

He gets sun from the window on a money tree outside his cage at most days during 9 am - 7 pm. He stays at the cage only at night or days when we go out all day.

I don’t know what is this, please advise your ideas, should I go to vets, or should I do any changes for the cage. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By providing this information you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to answer all these questions, but the more you provide the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile veterinarian who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnosis of your chameleon's health.

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
  • Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Please Note:
  1. The more details you provide the better and more accurate help you will receive.
  2. Photos can be very helpful.

Update for temperature (~76 F constantly) and humidity (at the bottom of the tank is very wet, most likely 90%-100%, top could be drier, about 60-80%).

Please fill out the form above. There are few changes many keepers here would suggest based on the picture above--however filling out that form @GoodKarma19 posted will allow people to address specific parts of your husbandry. :)

  • Handling - Handle everyday, 1 hour average
  • Feeding - Gut loaded crickets only, he doesn’t take other bugs, usually 2-5 every morning.

  • Watering - spray, at least twice a day, mist the whole cage, sometimes I see him drink but not often.
  • Fecal Description - consist standard brown-yellow-white, never be tested for parasites
  • History - Got it from New York Reptile EXPO

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Glass, Screen top, 10 gallon
  • Lighting - Completely nature sunlight (window facing west)
  • Temperature - No basking, ~76 F constant because of AC
  • Humidity - Bottom 90-100%, top 60-80%
  • Plants - live umbrella plant
  • Placement - Nearby a window AC, on a chair
  • Location - New York

Current Problem - Newly found black spots on the body

For starters Never keep crickets in a viv like that, very very unsanitary and she could get stuck in it or ingest dead crickets or cricket feces also chams can not climb a slick surface!! chameleons are arboreal...they live in forest canopy..there isn't dirt in tree tops, they will eat it and cause a number of complications, she needs a 24 x 24 x 45 viv with a linear t-5 or t-8 uv light, without the uv light she will perish...unable to metabolize calcium, if you would like I can show you a picture of one of my setups. She needs a wider and taller setup to thermoregulate as they do in nature, the top of the cage warmer bottom cooler......visualize (forest canopy) where they live

will do - I’m actually preparing a real weeping fig tree for him, will definitely change the environment soon! Thank you!

  • Your Chameleon - Senegal Chameleon, make, 1.5 year. I have him since March. WAS IT A HATCHLING WHEN YOU GOT IT?
  • Handling - Handle everyday, 1 hour average
  • Feeding - Gut loaded crickets only, he doesn’t take other bugs, usually 2-5 every morning. WHAT ARE THE CRICKETS GUTLOADED WITH?
  • Supplements - calcium + d3 + multi-vitamin dusting every time I buy new crickets, flicker for the brand? (don’t remember) WHAT DO YOU MEAN "DUSTING EVERY TIME I BUY NEW CRICKETS? IS THIS AN ALL IN ONE SUPPLEMENT?
  • Watering - spray, at least twice a day, mist the whole cage, sometimes I see him drink but not often. SENEGALS ARE BIG DRINKERS AS A RULE.
  • Fecal Description - consist standard brown-yellow-white, never be tested for parasites
  • History - Got it from New York Reptile EXPO

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Glass, Screen top, 10 gallon TEN GALLON IS NOT BIG ENOUGH. DOES IT HAVE A SCREEN LID?
  • Lighting - Completely nature sunlight (window facing west) LIGHT PASSING THROUGH GLASS DOES NOT PROVIDE UVB.
  • Temperature - No basking, ~76 F constant because of AC ... THIS IS TOO COOL. YOU NEED A BASKING LIGHT. YOU CAN USE A REGULAR HOUSEHOLD INCANDESCENT BULB THAT PROVIDES THE RIGHT TEMP.
  • Humidity - Bottom 90-100%, top 60-80%
  • Plants - live umbrella plant
  • Placement - Nearby a window AC, on a chair
  • Location - New York

Current Problem - Newly found black spots on the body
