Bird cage for balcony basking?

I was wondering about buying a cheap, relatively large bird cage for my veiled (don't have him yet, though). I have an indoor enclosure already, but I was thinking that I'd love my cham to get some fresh air and sun in the summertime at my balcony. Could he bask and hang out safely in a bird cage for a short period of time? Those kind of cages are much easier to get and cheaper too. Thanks for your advise.

I have used both a hamster cage and a larger wire chipmunk cage for my chams to sunbathe safely in. Just make sure that they have some shade and plenty of things to climb on and hide in.

A bird cage makes for a great basking cage.
I used large bird cages for my chameleons prior to building cages. they work great, if the ambient temperature isnt too too far from okay and doesnt fluctuate wildly, and same for humidity. Bird cages are better than screen cages, in that the chameleon can climb the bars without catching toenails, and you can easily secure vines and branches and feeding cups. But of course bird cages dont hold in crickets or roaches, so you HAVE to use a feeding cup for those.

When they bask in a wire cage they get a pattern on their skin where the bars create shade! :D Here's a pic of Lily demonstrating this!
