Hi all!
I was wondering if it is safe to handle a chameleon while pregnant. I am not pregnant yet and I do not have a chameleon yet, so I thought I would ask for future reference. Thank you :)

Hi!
Honestly, I'm not sure. I don't want to give you wrong information, but I will tell you what I have heard.

My high school science teacher had a leopard gecko my senior year of high school. She told me that she couldn't touch the gecko because if she did she would lose the baby. So I took care of it for her.

But she wasn't very educated in the care of the leopard gecko, so I am unsure of whether she was right or not.

Honestly, I don't think it would be that drastic to hold the chameleon/care for the chameleon while pregnant of you are meticulous about hand washing and cleanliness during the pregnancy.

But in saying that, I'm not a biologist or a vet so I cannot say for certain. That it is or is not safe. I know a few members on here have had babies/ are pregnant and still handle the chams so maybe one of them will tell you :)

There is always a possibility of parasites but good hand hygiene should always be carried out when handling reptiles or any other animal.Having said that I haven't read of any members here having a problem.:)

Seeing as chameleons shouldn't be held that much anyhow, I would just wear gloves while holding the chameleon when necessary. Also, regardless of if you're pregnant or not, it's always important to wash your hands after handling any reptile. :)
