Yea I've noticed that he will sometimes look past a cricket that's in his face and move towards one farther away, have you had any success feeding out of a bowl?
I don't use a "bowl". I like using a larger plastic storage box wedged into the lower part of the cage for the day. My cages are larger than most, so there is enough room. This way the feeders are semi-free ranged. They move around a lot more and have gutload available. The cham can watch them for a while before climbing down to the rim of the box to shoot. They have to stretch their tongues and use more eye-tongue coordination as the feeders are at a distance. If the box will get sprayed I also glue screen panels in the bottom for drainage.
