Beastie lives up to her name - 63 Eggs

I have a female veiled cham right around a year old whom I have renamed Beastie as she is huge for a female! I bought her and a female sibling as a male and female sibling duo but knew pretty quick I had two females. Beastie is much bigger than her sibling sister. I have not bred her yet, so I knew her clutch would be infertile, but after two days of digging, she laid late Sunday night. I gave her a good warm mist, cleaned the dirt off of her, fed her heavily with calcium cricks, but didn't have time to take care of the eggs before I had to leave for work yesterday a.m. Went home last night and cleaned the laying bin out - a total of 63 eggs! Now I'm not sure I'll ever breed her - what in the world would I do with 60+ babies if they all hatched!!!

I had no idea there was another KC person on here! Thats awesome! Thats also a ton of eggs!

Yeah... for real!

Yes, that would be one of the largest downfalls of breeding especially sicne they can lay such large clutches. Finding good home with persons who can properly care for them could be a real challange and in the meantime you'd have to care for them... which can be a bit of expense.

But boy she is a big girl isn't she! :D I'd love a Vield but for now my Hasband says..."No more"... :(

Glad to hear that she's doing well after laying. Even those she a big girl you might still want to cut down on her food and heat to try to get those clutches smaller. A smaller clutch will be easier on your female.

I didn't realize there was anyone else from KC on here either!

I have raised both of them using the "non-laying" method - lower temps that stay in the low 80's during the day and I only feed every three days. The smaller female has yet to produce and hopefully she won't and I definitely did not intend for Beastie to produce as I know it shortens their life span. Evidently mother nature had other plans!

My first female was also a big girl although I did overfeed her and keep her too warm (before I knew any better). She laid her first clutch at 14 months old of 104 infertiles, followed by her second clutch 4 months later of 102. Both clutches were infertile and she died a month after laying that second clutch. She weighed 200g AFTER that clutch too. Sadly, I learnt about overfeeding females the hard way.
