just a simple question as I have tryed hard to find a definitive answer but cant.
Do baby hatchlings need a basking light?

The temp in there viv stays around 72. I have read that this is fine with just a 5.0 uvb light and a basking light isnt needed when there this young. But then others say they do!?

What species?
I haven't provided a basking light for neonates for the first several weeks.
I have the UVB tube sitting directly on top of the enclosure and this brings the temperature at the top to around 80.
There are branches positioned quite close to the top and they do hang out higher up to be warmer.

Sorry, Veiled.
I also have the uv tube directly ontop.
They started hatching 1week 5 days ago and are still hatching. they dont have a basking light and all 17 seem to be doing really well so far.

At what age would they need the basking light in your opinion?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to provide something like a 25w clear 'heat' lamp to provide more UVA and stimulate a more natural instinct to bask in 'sun' light?

Interesting question regarding UVA. Do any of the UVB lamps also produce UVA?

The issue of basking heat for babies? Personally , I use a 15W appliance incandescent for babies in the winter months, but it is equally arguable that they don't need that . Throwing heat from a 15W bulb is simply insurance.

I dont think a basking light is necessary if the cage is of an adequate temp, at least not in the first days. However, I usually do use an appliance bulb of only 10-15 watts on the far end of the "bigger" baby cages.

So can I assume that during the warmer months you do not use UVA or heat lamps?

I don't use a basking bulb for my neonates, but I live in Florida and my house stays at 75 during the day. In the past several months it has been cooler in the mornings (nights I let it be what it will be), but the UVB does put off some heat. My babies are now 4 months old and have had a basking bulb for about 2 months now.

I have raised veiiled without a basking light until about 2 months. I keep the tanks warm but have never provided extra heat.

I raised my veiled baby with a zoo med 40w day glow or whatever their blue bulbs are.... I just used it as a light source and mild heat source. Never had any issue or all that much heat generated in the tub. It was placed at one side... and pointed more like to the side, I think I have a picture.... I had added a few sticks in the tub, one of which would let her 'bask' and I would find her there basking in the lamp often.

Yes UVB lamps do produce UVA. I guess if ambient temp is warm a UVB tube can maintain that... but I wouldn't trust a UVB lamp to warm a tub or smaller cage enough to warm a chameleon to operating temp if the room is cooler than 70*F.... I mean... they do need to warm up and it is psychological for them to basking under a warm glowing heat source resembling the sun I imagine.
