I just got a baby veiled from petco yesterday and he looks about 2 to 3 months old. The problem is he has a lot of difficulty moving around his cage, he cant even really climb up anything without struggle. We have to hand feed him and his tongue doesnt even come out a little bit. I have an adult veiled so i know everything there is to know to take care of one but i have no idea what is wrong with my baby. Thanks

can we see photos of him please?

what are you housing him in>
what temps are his baskng spot at?
What are you feeding, and how ofen are you misting?

i cant upload any photos but he is in a big cage with a basking spot of 89 and we fed him around 4 mealworms since we got him last night. We mist regularly and he looks like he is in perfect condition until he starts walking, its like his strength is gone. Thanks

I forgot to mention that when i hold him in my hand his legs and arms cant even support him to stand up straight.

does he have any extra joints on his arms or legs?

do his legs look bowed?

Trygetting some silkworms, pheonix worms (also known as calci or repti worms)

what supplements do you have?

also, why cant you load pics?

he has UVB bulb right?

Yes his legs looked bowed, you were spot on with everything you said. I cant get silkworms or the other worms around here. I have all 3 powder supplements for chameleons. The one without d3 and one with d3 and a vitamin one. Ill try and upload some pics then, thank you very much you know a lot about chameleons.

Ok he could have the beginning stages of MBD.

But if there are no extra joints or anyhting, you can halt the disease in its tracks.

for now, I suggest ordering those bugs online, (many of our site sponsors have them)

also if you can, gettin ghim some real sunshine will work wonders.

if is warm enough out side, even if its only like 70ish, take him out and place him in the sun.

remember, uvb does not pass through glass.

I know this sounds cruel but it sounds like you bought a very sick chameleon. Does that particular shop have a return policy on their live animals?

Yes he has a uvb bulb and heat lamp

Do you know if he had a UVB bulb at the pet store? 2 - 3 months without a UVB source could be the cause of his weakness! Poor little guy! It sounds like he'll need some serious TLC and I hope you are the forever home he needs to get him well again! Good luck!

Also, if he is weak the cage size you mentioned sounds rather large. Is it possible you could put him in a smaller cage, one that can be set up as a hospital cage with soft towels in the bottom so he doesn't fall an hurt himself? Sometimes while our chams are convelescing the best thing for them is heat, soft surfaces to rest on and tender loving care! :)

Ya i got him at petsmart so they had all the necessary things he needed. Thank you very much for your support I am very thankful and your a very nice person, so thanks again.

I believe that as part of the purchase agreement that Petsmart will try to nurse your guy back to health. (at least the one near me does) I know that the problems most likely occurred in the store, but it would be nice if they would be the ones paying for the medications and care since they sold you a sick cham! They usually do not do this for the inexpensive animals, but they do try with the more costly ones. Worth a try. Good luck!

sick Veiled Chameleon

I read your post and have the same issues with my veiled. I bought mine back in August from Petco, when I got him home he was always shaky didn't climb very well, I just thought it was because he was a baby, but the past week, he has taken a turn for the worst, he won't eat, he can't climb and he can't seem to move very well, he drags his back section. he won't drink either. I have been giving him water. I have him on the bottom of the cage on a towel and when I spray his face he sticks his tongue out and doesn't seem to want to put it back in. I don't know what to do and I don't want to lose him. I think he may have been sick when I got him. Does anyone have any suggestions. The only change that I have made is his light. I had separate lites up he had the uvb, the basking and the heat and he had a waterfall and a fogger to keep the humidity up. About two weeks ago I bought the new light called Solar and it has all in it uvb, uva and the heater. Pet store recommended it.

Sorry to hear about that. I hope ours dont get any worse, it seems like he has been getting stronger because we have been force feeding him crickets and mealworms because he wont eat them by himself. We also force him to drink some water with a little dripper thing. Good luck with yours i hope everything works out for ya.

I would suggest you fill in this form https://www.chameleonforums.com/how-ask-help-66/ and then paste it onto your own thread if you haven't already done so. Sorry to hear you're both having problems. This always seem to be the case with chams purchased from pet stores. :(

Just because petsmart/petco says they have it right,or they are doing xyz, or you need to do abc, doesnt mean they are right.

weve heard plenty of stories about how chams can live in fishtanks just fine, or you should always put a substrate down, or no they dont really need any special lighting. or keep the lights on 24/7, give thema water bowl to drink from, a waterfall is a great idea... the list goes on.
