baby veiled chameleon

Just had a couple of questions.
I got him on sunday and it's now Thursday.
He's still very dark most of the time, except when eating/sleeping, and when hes laying on my finger. Is there something in the cage that could be making him uncomfortable? I notice he almost never goes under his heat lamp that I keep at 34c, so I turned it down quite a bit. He also hides a lot. Hes a very good eater, how many crickets a day should I keep his diet at? 3-5? seems so little with such a great appetite! Also should I be "forcing him" to come out of his cage and bond with me or is it too soon?
sorry don't know the exact age.
also any advice on how to setup an exo terra repti 200? how the heck to I keep it from just splashing everywhere?

well how many feeders you feed is really determined by age. If you post a pic we can try and see how old. If it can lay on your finger then it must be small. If your chameleon is 3 months old or so, pretty much feed as much as they can eat. They can easily pound down 20 small feeders a day at that size. If you cham is hiding, he is not comfortable yet. Leave him alone and don't force him out. Try hand feeding him to get you used to him.

I would only pull him out of his cage 1 to 2 times a week. Most chams don't like to be touched. And the reason he may be dark is because he is adapting to his new cage and is a little stressed out. Definatley don't force him to come out of his cage. Let him come to you

Thanks! wonder why the pet store would tell me to take him out right away...crickets are pretty expensive there too, 20 for almost 5 bucks. would u happen to know where I could get them for cheaper? with his appetite he's going to cost me a fortune

I read somewhere that they can only eat 3-5 crickets a day.

At petsmart in AZ crickets are 10 cents a piece so I get 100 for ten bucks. But also look online for horn worms silk worms and for a treat give them wax worms and meal worms. And make sure you give them all the vitamins they need and gut load the crickets as well

I've already grown so attached to him. he was sleeping on my finger tn for about an hour and actually didn't want to get back in his cage at first. I use cricket calcium powder before feeding, how does the little guy look health wise?

gee...and they told me petsmart is no good, now I know why haha!

That is flat out wrong. Please read the care sheet for more correct information.

well I was feeding him 5-8 a day anyways. when I mist his cage it goes up to 50-60% humidity but only stays there for about 3 minutes then shoots back down to about 20%, I do this twice a day.

I was thinking of buying a dripper/mister but im not sure which one is best? I bought a repti flo 200 but I think im just gonna take it back because it splashes all over the place.

Welcome!

Your baby looks to be about 3-4 months old.

Let him eat as much as he wants.

You can order large orders of crickets from many of our site sponsors.

im talking 500-1000 counts of crickets.

His basking temp should be no higher than 85 right now.

Do you have a uvb bulb?

you shoul dbe misting about 3-6 times a day.

If you want a mister, get a mistking, best product in my opinion.

I use one for all my adults.

I use a UV light and a infrared light bulb for basking. if it was supposed to be no higher than 85f I was told totally wrong. ive been keeping it at the adult temp which is 35c 95f
could you link the website that I can buy crickets off of? also I think my cricket keeper would be too small for 500! lol

is it a UV, or a UVB? theres a difference..

What brand bulb is it>

as for basking bulb, you can use just a regular house bulb for that, its a boat load cheaper.

Even as an adult, I wouldnt keep them at 95. I keep my 2 year old adult male at 88.

He only gets higher temps whne he goes outside during the summer.

Are you sure you have a male?

Heh what they say they order vs what they actually got are very different.

any chance you can get a pic of the back of the back feet?

males have little tarsal spurs, look like heels or pimples on the back of the back feet.

check what the brand is if you can, it shoudl say on th ebulb. that way we can be sure its an actual UVB bulb.

as for my basking bulb, i just use a regular store brand house bulb (not the coil) like hwat you use in a lamp or something.

The wattage you need depends on what temps you need.

I use a 100 watt for my male veiled and panthers, and a 75 for my female veiled (females require lower temps)

Here is a pic of my male, you cansee the bump on his foot.

and my female, where there is no bump.

I can't post pics right now but I will later. I have his heat lamp turned right down atm but what wattage light bulb should I buy since hes a baby? also if I turned up the regulator while a normal house hold light bulb in would that possibly burst it? i'm almost positive he's a male but I can have a look/post pics, i'll also take pics of his enclosure

I would use a 60 watt and see what temps you get. then go up or down from there.

As for your regulator, I honestly have no idea, as i dont use one. I just use regular fixtures from home depot.

If you look at my pics you can see the spur on my male, and the no spur on my female.

you are of course welcome to post pictures, we love pics, and I would be happy to critique your enclosure for you.

here is his enclosure. I've been misting/using an ice cube to drip on the opposite side of his basking light.

could you please link a website for me to buy crickets off of? also is petsmart ok for crickets for now? they're cheaper than this other pet store ive been going to.
