Baby Cham firing up?

He shouldn't be basking so much. Is the ambient temp really cold? Mine bask for about 30-60 minutes then hang out else where and come back every now and then throughout the day. I'm not really sure why he would so much unless the rest of the cage is freezing.

The other thing is, he remains a drab brown color for 90% of the day and he also basks for about 90% of the day. Is this normal?

Here are two pics: first one is what he looks like basking and second is what he looks like when he's roaming around or in the foliage.

Babies will spend most of the time basking. Just keep watch if he is active/drinking/eating. Make sure you are supplementing with calcium WITHOUT D3 every feeding. Calcium intake is VERY important at this age. You can use calcium with d3 about once a week with multivitamins. Are you only feeding him crickets? If so i suggest ordering some phoenix worms. Coastal silk worms has them and make sure you get small.

Dont get small. They are very tiny and his chameleon is 3 1/2 years old. Mine is around 4 months and eats medium phoenix worms. He even ate phoenix worms at 3 months...the medium size

hey everyone--I'm back from home dept, bought a digital thermometer, and was able to get an accurate reading already...

whadda ya know. Basking zone was 86 degrees. Light is being immediately adjusted to bring that down to 80 degrees. Thanks to everyone for urging me to do this.

At least I can rest assured about that now.

He does bask literally all day long (lights are on 12 hrs a day) coming off his perch only a few times a day for a jaunt around the cage. I posted pics of him earlier in the thread on and off his perch. Check out the brown color he stays all day while basking.. Is this okay? I'm not sure what juvenile stress colors are...

Hopefully, basking this long for a juvenile is normal as Bongrod suggested....

Babies bask more than adults, but mine has never basked more than a total of 3-4 hours a day even when she was younger. My friends only bask for a few hours as well. I'm not sure about this...

I forgot to say that ambient temp in my house is a steady 70 degrees all day and 68 at night...

Any more thoughts on juvenile panther basking all day?

Any one want to chime in with their experiences here?

I was wondering if 80 is high enough actually but I do not know panthers as well as jacksons and veileds

So my questions are increasing...

Since I now know temp was a little high in basking zone (86 degrees) -- is it normal for him to be basking so long (especially since temps were a little high) and stay dark brown (which would attract more heat)?
