Today, me and Amanda went to Home Depot to find some more pothos and we found an awesome deal!!

I'm not sure if it's all stores but it is worth a shot. They have assorted tropical plants on sale for 17.99. They were all 6ft+ We got to Schlefferas from there.

We got these

-That one we have is almost 7ft tall and has branches that go out about 5 feet. It's HUGE!!

-This one is huge as well. It's not as wide but it is very very bushy.

We got these to free range our panthers on every now and then.

Those are both very nice.

i actually found my best buys at the mexican style frys food and drug, massive 7' plants for only 9 bucks.

allthough the home depot did have some amstel ficus, which i wanted, but they were 18 bucks a pop for a 4'

The homedepot in Colorado has all plants on sale for 50% off. I bought a Potho for 6.50 and a my jasmin for 8.00. I was super happy!!!

The plant in the first picture is a shifflera right? If so that plant is toxic. Just a FYI just in case you decide to put your cham on it from time to time. :D

You are thinking of a money tree, this is the broad leaf version I believe. Would need better pics to tell, though, so you may be correct.

It was marked as Schefflera Actinophylla and that is on the safe list. Also, I haven't seen any of our chams take a bite out of plants so I doubt they would out of this one. It's just for them to free range on for an hour or so supervised.

I think the only Schefflera that's safe is the Arboricola. The others are not. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I just went plant shopping, and picked up one of the "safe" ones.

The link clearly states that the second one is too toxic for captive chameleons. Why would you purchase it after researching it? Why take a chance? There are lots of safe plants out there.

I'm not keeping it in their cage nor do my chameleons eat the plants. They will probably free range on it for maybe an hour at a time and will be well monitored. It says that its toxicity is when eaten. I dont think there should be a problem if they don't eat it.

When we first got it we werent sure if it was toxic or not. Then we looked it up when we got back. I'm still not sure if that's the exact plant (maybe someone else knows?) But if we notice any problems it will just be a house plant to look at.

BTW guys im not trying to stir up any problems. I bought that plant and was told that it was toxic. If that's the way your thinking, then why do you even care about what plants are in your chameleons cage? Even if you have not seen them eat any plant! We buy specific plants and put specific plants that are not toxic in our chameleons cages as well as plants for our chameleons to free range on so if there is that one time that they mistakenly eat it they are ok and not poisoned. :D

I have never seen a nip out of a leaf so why would they randomly eat it if they aren't randomly eating the ones in their enclosure? Ficus cause problems because of sap coming out from broken limbs yet people still use them. It's all circumstancial. You don't expect the chameleons to break limbs that much and cause it to sap so they use ficus in the enclosures. I dont expect them to eat the leaves (that are larger than they are) because they never do it so I will more than likely allow them to go on it as well as the other one.

My Veiled on the other hand will not be allowed on that plant because he eats veggies all the time.

Cool, I am just expressing my point of view! We are all here to learn from our positive and negative experiences. I bought that same plant and wanted to use it for my chameleon as well. I posted a few picks and was told it was toxic I then took it out and never used it again. No one is telling you to take it out never use it we are just giving our two cents on what we think. If you did not want us to do that then you should not have posted it on the forums. I too have never seen my chameleons just sit there and eat a plant, but I have seen them accidentally eat a plant when striking their prey. Another time was when they were shooting the plant to get some water and the plant ended up in their mouth they ended up eating it. I did not mind the chameleon eating the plant knowing that the plant was safe. These precautions are not only for our chameleons but for ourselves to reassure ourselves that "just in case" it does happen its ok and wont harm our pets. Being on the forums as much as you are, you should know people are here to help one another and no one is trying to tell you what to do. That being said, these are your own pets and you can do as you want with them we are all just here to help and you should not take it personal.

i have and have used actinophyla in my enclosures, my panther does not eat it, so as far as i am concerned its safe, i would not use it in a veileds enclosure.

Clemonde you are correct.

I want to confirm that the plant "Schefflera Actinophylla" is toxic and I would recommend against its use. Even for non plant eating reptiles.

Syn , that is not a money tree but a money tree is toxic as well.

I also thought I sould include that I have seen Panthers , young , old and in between chew on leaves dead and alive.

I always side on the err of caution.

All scheffleras including the arboricola are toxic if eaten. If the was the case then why would it be on the safe plant list?

"Plants of the genus Schefflera contain fine, needle-like calcium oxylate crystals within the plant cells. If ingested, these crystals can cause significant mechanical irritation and swelling of the oral tissues and other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Based on this, it is advisable to keep Schefflera species out of your pets’ reach."

If you do not have something nice to say keep it to yourself. I do not appreciate snide comments like this:

HELL myeah i got mine from there and they were way cheaper but thats beside the point thats a pretty good deal i got two for that price by my place

Also your chams may not purposely eat the plant. My male occasionally whne he is hunting and the food is smaller than his sticky part of the tongue will engulf the entire criket and rip the leaf it is stuck too back in with the cricket and just eat away. So I would still be careful. You don't want to lose your cham for something that could have easily been prevented. but thats just my opinion and expierence with panthers and plants.

LOL your funny. :D I think you are confused. We are talking about the same plant, Brassaia actinophylla and as I said earlier that plant is TOXIC. Therefore if we can substitute that plant for another one then why not do it? My POST was constructive because I was explaining that there should be an alternative to that plant due to its toxicity.
